Quail Chicks Hatched with Crusty, Covered Eyes! Help!

I don't want to cull these birds as they seem super healthy otherwise. They hatched a few days ago, and I noticed one always chirping and then saw his eye was crusted over with some brown/reddish crust. Someone told me to take a damp Qtip and moisten it and rub and it came off. Now he is running...

I'm not sure what you want us to say? Either the bulb is burnt out or the lamp is defective, we can't tell you which without being there.

    Summer Heat

You can give ice cubes in their waterer, mine like that. I think frozen water bottles are fine too. The heat is taxing on them and can stop them from laying. I'm in Columbia getting the same heat wave you are and I only got one egg today.

Sounds like they're getting splay legged? They can get splay legged even on paper towels...try the non skid material like used in pantries. You also need a thermometer underneath your heat lamp.

Feeding Chicken Laying Mash To Bobwhite Quails

They need a game bird feed supplemented with calcium like from crushed oyster shell. Chicken feed doesn't have the right nutrition for game birds.

    Jumbo Brown Coturnix

For jumbos I'd expect 12 grams minimum, 13-15s normal. For the breeders, they should be near a pound at full size, maybe a little less. This is for jumbo browns from a good line.

    Jumbo Brown Coturnix

I'm sure you can find great eggs, locally or shipped to you if you don't want to wait. Make sure to ask how much the eggs weigh in grams, and how big their breeders are on average if not buying from someone reputable.

    Jumbo Brown Coturnix

Your typical Craigslist ad will always say "jumbo browns" even though they might weigh 9 oz as adults. There is no official standard and it probably makes them sell more eggs. JMF has great jumbo browns. I personally avoided the A&Ms but he has the biggest available. The white birds can be...

Going to involve recycled lumber. I used decking boards. The hardware cloth isn't cheap however.

I was able to sex my jumbo browns at about that age. At 3-4 weeks it will be much more obvious.

    Quail

It depends on the kind of quail. Most recommend 1 square foot per bird, so 6 coturnix quail. If it's a grow out pen for butchering, you could probably add some more.
