Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

You're on the Gulf Coast?? Who do you use for blood tests/etc? I'm in Mobile and chicken vets are hard to find; I'm going to check with the one vet listed as "Avian" tomorrow (since today is Fat Tuesday and everything is closed). I suspect Marek's in a sick bird (hatchery stock; vaccinated)...

    Rescue chickens advice needed

I don't know your housing set-up but - - I'd provide a dust-bath with Diamotaceous (sp?) earth; supplement the waterers with electrolytes; and 'pooper-scoop' the area frequently at 1st. Eggs should be fine. I have a newly acquired batch of Ameraucana pullets that sound like yours, except the...

    Hen Attacked by an Animal

I had a bad night last July due to a neighbor's dog, lost 25 chickens. I nursed 3 back to complete health, two of which had horrible injuries. I isolated them in wire cages. Twice a day cleansed wounds with Chlorhexidine soap and rinse ($4 for 8 oz bottles from my vet), f/b Triple A ointment...

    Neurological chicken?

Possibly Marek's? In which case she may recover if given support (I think there is a thread regarding survival of hen with Marek's disease r/t natural immunity of the flock). I had a Buff Orp that I thought had Marek's (which is how I discovered that thread) but it turned out she had a head...

    ALABAMA!!

Hey chirpingcricket, I'm in West Mobile - in the process of moving to a 10 acre spread in Wilmer.

Hope I'm doing this right, I'm not very familiar with this stuff. I found your old thread regarding brachydactyls in the Marans; I just had this happen with a cockerel, very disappointing as I deliberately pursued this particular line to strengthen the quality of my flock. And although the...

    Marans and toe length

Hey - I realize this is a really old thread, but I recently (May 2013) hatched some FBCMs that are supposed to be very high quality from a nationally recognized line. The pullet is beautiful, and so is one of the two cockerels - - - except for extremely shortened outer toes, on both feet. The...

    Feathers plucked, broken skin.

Separating her may be as simple as wiring off a tiny corner of the pen with its own food/water, pole-thru-the-wire, or a plastic dog kennel, or any large cage/container that would hold her for several nights. Mine free-range so I've only had the rooster-abuse issue. Good luck.

Haven't seen this. How is your silky doing?

    Feathers plucked, broken skin.

Do you have Blu Kote? If the skin is (relatively) intact I recommend swabbing it to hide the skin color. Really need to find who is pecking her, or if you have a rooster she may be his favorite - still woud use the Blu Kote, though. I've seen 'saddle pad' gizmos for hen protection, don't use...

I have Light Sussex also; my Good Looking Guy (and he is SO fine) has a hen he prefers; she looked like your picture until I Blu Kote-ed her - twice now!

Bowel Vent function return in spinal cord injuries

This is 2nd time I've had a chicken with traumatic SCI (predator) resulting in loss of bowel/vent motility. 1st time was worse, cockerel was actually hemiparetic (1 side almost paralyzed) and although able to walk 1 month later, still required total manual evacuation of bowels, so culled :(...

Chicken got bit on the butt

Agree with the 1st reply; I get Chlorhexidrine (sp) soap and rinse from my vet, trim the area with scissors and tweezers, apply liberal quantities of AAA ointment from Walmart (I'm cheap; I'm going to Hell); and apply Fly Swat (repellent), all twice a day. If its ugly, I give an IM shot of...

What can bring back to health an Anemic chicken

Thanks. So true about the 'old post' - I've only had chickens 3 years, have learned to treat the injuries but have yet to have a sick chicken . . . until bringing home 2 rescue chicks yesterday, a Light Sussex and a Buff Orp. About 8 to 10 weeks old, weakish, dirty (I bathed them ASAP with...

    Black Copper Marans discussion thread

PawHead Poultry has FBCMs, Cottage Hill line. Check their website, I think they have eggs right now. The guy who runs it seems very helpful , responds to emails/calls in a timely fashion. If you paid extra for expedited shipping I would think the Maine temps wouldn't be anymore detrimental...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Out of our 1st try for OEs, BCM roo x 2 different Ameraucanas, 6 hatched 10-26-2012 and it looks like only 1 will be female. I'm holding little hope for fuzz-faced white, build is too similar to feather-legged white who just started crowing. Shame, they're spectacularly striking. Will try to...

    ALABAMA!!

We've been buying day old BCMs from a guy in eastern MS, near the Gulf Coast. Our year old BCM cock and hen appear close to the French SOP. Currently she's raising 7 chicks (6 BCMs, 1 SS - lost 4 chicks thanks to a hawk!!!). I've read the BCMs produce a majority males to females and our...

Rooster Injured By Dog - Not Sure If I Need To Cull

Thanks for the update; I wish more people would follow up like that. Aren't chickens great healers?! (Scary, was't it? . . .)
