Rooster Injured By Dog - Not Sure If I Need To Cull

We live in an area where people sometimes don't take personal responsibility for their dogs and our flock was attacked by two dogs this past Thursday. We lost four chickens ( one rooster, three hens ) and one rooster was injured.

The rooster is about 9 months old, is a large fowl dark cornish/buffie cross. He did not roost the evening of the attack, he just stood in the corner of his coop, on the ground. This is where I found him right after the attack and where he stayed for about 18 hours. Every evening after that, he's roosted on the lower bar, about 2' off the ground, so improvement. He also was wheezing the day after the attack, but has since stopped, more improvement.

He comes out of the coop every day now with his ladies, he does drink water. My husband says he's seen him peck around for food, I've only seen him do it a small amount. He seems better in some ways, but the same in others. His tail feathers hang down a lot and are dull, but he will bring them up if I approach, his comb had flopped over, but it seems to be perking back up to more normal looking. Overall, his behavior has changed, he's by himself more. He's usually standing or walking slowly around. I do know he has an injured wing. His stool appears normal. He seems to keep to himself sometimes, he's not social anymore. I do know to watch for standing alone without moving for long periods of time and also being puffed up, but he hasn't done that. The other chickens aren't pecking at him or trying to harm him at all.

I just need a little help determining the difference between discomfort associated with a healing injury or an injury that will take his life and is causing him great suffering. So, in a nutshell : injured wing for sure, eating(not as much as he normally would ), drinking, pooping fine, withdrawn, by himself more. Goes into the coop every night, eager to come out in the morning. Have you been in this predicament? What did you do? I told my husband I'm going to give him until tomorrow.

My opinion: give him some more time. He's eating, drinking, pooping and (minimally) active. If he was suffering very bad that wouldn't happen. When mine were injured I had them separated in small cages, gave them any/everything they would consider to eat while treating their injuries. Chickens are incredible healing machines. Have you had the opportunity to check for more specific injuries like puncture wounds? Chicken bruises (in my birds) are bright green.

Give him time.

I would give him a chance, I'd be worrying if he wasn't eating or drinking but maybe he just needs some time, and like the above says - check thoroughly for any wounds

He's inside now in a large cage made out of a play yard.

I put him inside a few hours ago. He wouldn't eat at all, so I had to open his mouth and feed him. I fed him scrambled eggs and kefir and water with electrolytes. I'm wondering now if his jaw is broken? When he chews, it goes side to side a little bit. He seems a little more perky, he was puffed up this morning, but not anymore and he's cocking his head a little bit to check things out in the room. The second time I fed him, he reached his head out to eat a few small fallen pieces of egg off of my leg and that made me feel a lot better. His comb has more color in it and is now very warm, it was cold when I brought him in earlier. It looks like he got up to drink some water on his own.

I think it's still very touch and go, if his jaw is broken this would explain some of the pecking I saw without him opening his mouth.

I wouldn't worry about a broken jaw yet, just keep pushing the high calorie soft foods and electrolytes-in-water diet. Earthworms are popular; one of my local chain store pet stores has live mealworms.

Just an update for those who followed this. The rooster pulled through and is now back with his ladies. It took him about a week of being fed and watered with a syringe before he could eat on his own, but once he started feeling better he improved quickly.
