Here's a picture of Broody Judy... She's a grouchy Buff Orpington who's only goal in life seems to be mothering... She's cranky until she has a pile of eggs to sit on. She loves me. I can pick her up and hold her for hours. None of the other chickens like her and she doesn't like them...
Both of my big Labs ignore the chickens like they are not even there. Every once in a while a dog will take a sniff at one of the girls and get pecked... the dog cries and runs off... I was expecting it to be difficult to train labs not to chase birds, it's not.
I soaked and boiled a pot of chickpeas/garbanzo beans this week. I let them cool overnight. To my great surprise (not really because the darn girls eat everything) the mother cluckers went absolutely bezerk over those little pale balls of delight. You know they love something when they grunt...
I think the ladies like it. We put all or table scraps and garden trimmings in here..... They use their dinosaur claws to break it up and eat what they like.
And, yes, they are spoiled...
Hoping one of my fellow Oregonians will know what the heck is going on.... One of my 20 week Barred Rocks has started laying... She does the weirdest thing. Before she lays her egg she starts limping when she walks. Once she lays the egg, she walks normally. Otherwise she's a healthy...
LOLOLOL.... Yeah.... about 3 minutes after I took that pic a huge nightcrawler came up and one of the orphs grabbed it and ran like the devil screaming bloody murder. They are characters!
Yeah, he likes the hogs more than the other chickens. They pick on him, but the hogs just let him stand there and eat with them and roost on their backs... That's one twisted Rooster!
For those of you who remember on this thread: Rosie, turned into Rodney..... I can't have a roo in the city.... :-( Thanks for CL and some others careful observance... Here's him from my house 2 weeks ago....
Two weeks on my friends farm, Rosie/Rodney the transvestite bird....
Thinks...
