I would just open the door and let them venture out at thier own leisure! Throw some black oil sunflower seeds and call them. Do it for a few days and use the same tone and call every morning...make it your routine.. give them time and they will come around!
My niece has 10 hens that are 2-3 yrs old. She doesn't eat the eggs and since I don't have my chickens yet ,she always drops eggs off. The shells are super thin and brittle but not soft. The egg whites are just like water! She gathers daily and it hasn't been hot. Her coop is tiny but they have...
Peanut butter smeared on the elec. Fence will make them lick it... also be sure you do not have any trees close to the coop, because they will learn to climb the tree and drop into or onto the run or coop! A friend has bees and the bears learned to avoid the fence going in by climbing trees...
I don't want to go super big because, I want it to remain fun... I really don't want a full time job with the chickens. I want 5 Bantam and 15 large hens of different varieties for eye candy in my egg basket! :)
Thank you! I have drawn up 100's of designs. The site is slightly raised, easy acess from my house and can be as large or small as needed (we have 100acres) with no restrictions. It will be shaded in the summer ,from 11a-4p... I will keep playing until time to decide.
.
We will start my coop with in the next few weeks or as soon as the weather decides to stop being manic!
I want it to be approx. 144sq ft. , 1/4 of the coop will be for bantam cochins, I need a small area for food bins and the rest will be for large hens. BUT for the life of me, I can't figure...
aart, we will save a trip with the cement truck if we do it all at once and by only needing to build three walls in the green house, it would save us some materials, time etc.
Thank you all. I will definitely, be snapping pictures as I go. Since I have always wanted a little greenhouse, I think this will be the perfect place and time for it. I already have extra windows, glass doors, a big old sink, white pea gravel for the floor and wire shelving for the plant...
Thank you for asking. The greenhouse would be attached to the south wall of the coop and would only share one wall. It would not have anything to do with the run or coop.
We are getting ready to start my coop. I had the "great" idea that it would be really nice to have a small greenhouse attached to it. But am not sure of the problems that might occur with this set up. We will be pouring cement for the coop and the need for only three walls of glass will cut...
For months now, I have been reading 'backyard chickens' on Facebook.. I thought it was BYC ..Well I found out Friday it was NOT.. It turned into a 'horror' show of cussing, ranting and raving.. When I went to remove it from my page, I saw the disclaimer " we are not affilated with BYC... thank...
You will get lots of opinions on this .. I spent 1000$ on the coop and run. It was Fort Knox , completely enclosed with chain link fencing and 1"x1" hardware around the entire bottom. The coop had cement floor and a metal roof. We used heavy wood siding , a metal door and hardware cloth on the...
I would think that the fountain would need daily cleaning .My 'dish pan required daily care. The fountains that have the bucketa/tubs buried would be a pain to maintain.
I never noticed my girls trying to play in the stream of water but I used a large dishpan type water bowl.. They would sit in it when it was really hot, they would walk thru it and drink and sit around the edges of the pan.. One day I found the prettiest blue egg laying in the water.. Seems my...
Great job.. Are you going to be in the Inside the Beltline Tour D'coop--chicken tour this yr??? It is alot of fun and I love seeing all the coops/yards..
I just spoke to our wild life resource officer (been doing this for 32yrs). He told me, that a cat will eat the head off the poultry and leave the entire body.. He stated "I have a grainy video of this happening in a coop-- the cat did it to 5 full grown chickens. First killing and then chewing...
Thank you, That's an adorable coop. My neice has one like that. She started with 4 BO and then decided she needed4 RIR. So she had a guy enclose the 'run' part of it and put a roosting boards in there... Then placed it in a 20'x10' chainlink dog run and put a roof over it... She has enough room...
