Hi all-
I am new to the chicken world. We used to have ducks. We got 4 Isa Browns from TSC and we live in a neighborhood so we can not let our chickens free range. The coop my husband built is 4ftx4ft with a run that is 3ft high x 8ft long x 3ft wife. Do chickens need something higher than...
Mama is sitting in our barn currently I am getting antsy to meet our newest babies. I am a little stumped on how to contain them but still allow Mama to get outside. Any thoughts?
I am looking for some advice. I have a broody hen sitting on about 15-20 egg. I'm estimating their hatch date to be around December 19-22 somewhere in that date. My question though is that we have 10 adult ducks and I'm afraid that my new hatchlings will be trampled. Does anyone have any advice...
Yes now the waiting game begins. Just make sure even though you want to help them to let them hatch on their own! That was my son and I's hardest problem... we wanted baby duckies NOW! LOL
The waiting game is the absolute hardest thing!!! Leaving them alone is super hard. In September we incubated 7 eggs and out of the 7, 4 hatched out. 2 never pipped and one had pipped but I guess died in the process. I never saw movement in them either until one day I was washing dishes and I...
OMG so I just realized.... NEXT weekend (which also happens to be my daughters 2nd birthday. We will be having baby ducklings. Mama is sitting on a nest of about 15-20 I haven't messed with them at all. I have heat lamps outside in the barn for them, but how do I keep the babies safe from the...
Thanks, she is in our barn, it is locked up at night and with the other ducks, I will have to put a fence or something around her when they hatch, I will have to candle in a few days to see what is going on. I have 2 heat lamps in there for them so I think that should be enough to keep her warm...
I have a Rouen hen, we have been missing her for the last 3 days my son went into the barn and "didn't see her" so we assumed she was killed by something. I went into the barn to fill water and food last night and happened to look in the back corner where it's dark. Darn if she isn't sitting on...
Hi there-
I haven't posted in awhile but I am seeking advice. I have 9 ducks in my flock, 5 hens and 4 drakes. I have a mix of Khaki Campbell, Rouen, and Pekin. Although I do believe one of my Rouen females is a Mallard. With that being said, my Rouen (Mallard) hen is the smallest of the flock...
Update: I tossed the old eggs out. Have a fresh batch cooking originally had 12 in but 7 of them are coming along nicely. They are due to hatch on September 28th!!! Wooo hoooo
Yes, we have 5 males and 4 females. My son dropped one by accident when we were turning and it cracked so we are down to 7. I finished cracking it to expose the yolk and there were no veins or anything? Shouldn't there be something at day 5? I know my drakes are aggressive little buggers too so...
So my son and I have recently started incubating 8 eggs. (which of my girls laid them we do not know). We are into day 5 and after candling them it looks like nothing is happening... Should we wait a few more days or give up and try again? This is our first time incubating eggs. We are using the...
They are currently in our garage until it's warmer but we are working on it. My last flock refused to go in the barn at night and slept outside so that was what happened there. So I'm hoping with non flying domestic this go round they will allow me to herd them to the barn at night for safe keeping!
So we got 16 ducks 2 years ago then inherited 3 more bringing our total to 19. Everything went great until they started laying and a snake broke into the pen. Then it was a ripple effect snake, fox, then my mallards flew away not to return. Fast forward 2 years we are trying again. This time 3...
Well guys went to check on momma and eggs. We were on day 15-17 mama and all of her egg are gone. So now we're looking into incubating the other set of eggs before something gets toes. This week we've lost 3 ducks and an entire nest. So going to try our luck at incubating.
Ok so I have another silly question. Will a broody female "test out" sitting for a couple of days? I noticed another nest the past couple of days in the barn on the very opposite side as my serious "sitting" duck. Went in today and no one was sitting on the eggs, went back in because my son...
