Good evening All! Another busy work year. All the rain has not helped out. Down to one business, so it has removed a lot of stress. Just the two of us to worry about. Clean, feed, and collect eggs....is about all I've had time for. No roos...all canned & waiting for colder weather & soup...

    what to feed meat chicks

I like to butcher culls early in the morning. Crop is empty, and makes cleaning much easier. Typically I will start before daylight. Easy to take off the roost.

We had a great spring with the long beards. Look forward to it more than the deer season. Started out doing meat birds. Easier now to cull the roos. We mostly can, and its hard to beat the flavor added by a roo or a older hen v.s. a 8-10 week old meat bird.

If they were a couple of months older I would. Mine are around 19 weeks old and I'm butchering this weekend. Low simmer..veggies and spices... then can & eat this winter. Broody hatched 6 more. Already over my self imposed limit of 12 hens. Will decide at end of summer who stays and who is soup.

Our snow is mostly gone. Which means the return of predators. Put the girls back in their run 3 days ago. The dog let me know the fox returned tonight. Must be a very pungent scent for the dogs nose. Can always tell when he lights up on a fox. Couple of the girls keep flying the coop. Will...

I agree with BigZ. Build or buy a good coop. My business is tied to the construction season. So there are a lot of days they will get 10 minutes of my time max. Check feed & water, do poop boards, get eggs. Floor is deep litter. About as maintenance free as I can get. And if we are...

Yep, just back in from the coop. Had to do some new wiring to set up brooder for cold weather. My brahma's have never gone broody in winter months. Guess the OE's & marans thought different. Young Roo & winter, will see how the hatch rate goes.

Congrats on the bees & chicks! Getting ready to do some hiking next week. Looks like we will be bringing winter with us to the southwest. Chicks are hatching under the 2 broodies. We will see how they do with a long stretch of winter to go.

    CC (Cornish Cross) as pet?

Few years ago I had a group of cx that I had a mix of pullets and cockerels. Two of the pullets just did not get to size, and winter had arrived so I put them in with my layers. One made it to about 6 months....the other about 16 months. I was surprised the older one passed. She was going to...

After Tuesday and Wednesday, it was downright balmy working outdoors today. Will be in shorts and t shirt by sunday! Chickens thought the same, and were outside today. I have a wood boiler..so I plow a very large area for wood & moving equipment for the business, so they have a big play ground...

Stopped by to wish all a Happy New Year!! Amazing how fast it goes by. Coop is fine, hope to do some work on it after I catch up with the business the next few weeks. Think I'm at 1 roo, 9 layers & 3 pullets. pretty much cover the color spectrum of eggs. 2 of the layers are retired, and...

Love the driftless region. Work & hunt the area. Don't forget the Blue Goose for pizza. Grew up in the glacial lake basin ( Southern Wood County ). Flat land, sand, jack pine & black oak. Took me awhile getting used to operating equipment on the steep slopes of the driftless area.

Are feral chickens ok to eat?

Of course you can eat them. City folks pay top $$ for free range eggs & poultry/beef/pork.

Hi all! Hope all are doing well. Ladies were enjoying free ranging with snow mostly gone. Not happy today with snow on the ground again. Good production for winter time...I don't do extended light. My 2 meat gals I kept are my most consistent layers. About time for my Brahma to decide its...
