Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Back from camping on the Eau Plaine. Weather was a bit wet this morning but we had packed up most of the site last night so just odds and ends as it rained around us this morning. Fun to hear you have so many little peeps around you Jim, hard to wait for a whole year before we do it again but our plan is solid for adding on a bit at a time. Camping laundry today and balancing the checkbook/bill pay as not much else going on. May make a run to the big city for milk and eggs but can't get those rolls that Jim makes out of my head so may start a batch of those before I go. Weeds starting to germinate in the new beds, kale picked, tomatoes need weaved and lawn needs mowed but with the weather I will wait. Hoping the heat later in the week will speed up the new beans so we will have a fall crop before frost. Anyone know what the almanac says for this year's predicted date?

Down in Chicago at the Food Technology expo........... It is amazing what food companies are coming up with. I had a vegetarian pizza today that used a gluten compound as the chicken meat... It was amazing and fantastic! At some point I need to make my way to the booth with the insect protein compound...... If I could take pictures I would. I am learning a lot and doing quite a bit of networking.

Chicago is great for people watching too. :)

good sunday evening,

Jordan came and got his chicks today.. ended up with 32 of them, 2 died after birth. a couple were pipped and gave up.

He said these were dual purpose chickens. HUGE eggs.
I don't remember the breed.

Quote: I might eat the birds with resp. symptoms only but my birds had infection and/or lesions on their organs...no way I'm eating that.
It's hard to say when your flock will be safe. Different diseases can live without a host for different amounts of time. Some viruses can live on cotton clothes or even in your nose hairs for hours to days and be carried around. Clean up all poo and bedding from the culled birds, bag or burn. Wash everything you can and give a bleach water rinse...spray the coop with bleach water and let dry too.

Went on the steam train in Laona this weekend. Friends of ours were camping there with their horses and 'robbed' the train several times....the kids loved it, lots of shooting, yelling, horses rearing. If you have kids I'd recommend going on a 'robbery' weekend but adults who are into trains and/or our logging history would probably enjoy it any time. They have a very nice museum and the engine is the only one of it's kind left and is 100 years old this year.

Got the whole garden tilled again today. Weeds back under control. Then picked a five gallon bucket of cukes, 2 plastic bags full of huge beans (to be pickled tomorrow), a dozen peppers and a small bag of second crop broccoli. The dill is starting to try and tip over the heads are so huge. The pumpkin vines look like they are failing for some reason. :( I got a lot of sun today and got a lot of work done. Feeling good!

good morning,

finally have internet connection again, after over 24 hours without.

It won't last,

ended up with 32 live chicks from the final hatch.
I tossed all the unhatched eggs.. even tossed the goose eggs.
shut er down for this year.

did I mention that the DE did a good job on our potato beetles ?
gave another dose of powder and then it rained that night.
I am thinking that even though it is washed to the ground, any bugs crawling on the ground will get it ..
a 40 pound bag of it costs under $20.oo at F&F. a little goes a long way when dusting..
I dusted along the foundation on the west end of the house. GS has ants coming into his bedroom there. waiting to see of this helps...

I THINK I have the short fixed on Ollie.. I left the battery hooked up over night.. this morning we will see if I got it or not..

Good to hear the DE is working Jim. I put it by my corn last year and around my house too. It works wonders on ants and earwigs. If your ever in Antigo and think of it stop at the country store. They sell 5lb sacks for about 3.50. It's cheap enough either way I guess.

Quote: wow , that is inexpensive,, almost worth the drive .
I have never had a problem in the garden with any bugs except the potato bugs.. I think having guineas patrolling is the reason why .. the only damage the guineas do is dust bathing and kicking out a cuke plant, here and there.. they like the soft dirt after I rototill.
