Coops Done July 2009!
The rain was relentless in June/early July, but we finally did it. Complete with electrical and water hook up, we're off and running. The girls stayed outside for the first time last night (July 15th). They were initially a little anxious (with alot of...

Building The Coop
The previous owners of our house built a kids playhouse years ago. We moved it using a car jack and sched 80 PVC pipes (right hand side). Up on cinder blocks and on to digging holes for run posts and trenches for placing the...
I am so sorry about Rosie! I almost cried reading your post...I found two of mine last spring, dead and no signs/symptoms and no explanation after necropsy... so you just hit a nerve:hit
And just know this - I would have given a butt-load of money to just have been able to hold them when they...
Update: Found my barred rock (Selma) on the floor of the coop being pecked by the others when I went to go check on her last night...so glad I did!
So I had to take her in...it'll suck trying to reintegrate her later, but hopefully worth it in the end.
AND this morning I'm noticing her wheezing...
Thank you both! It makes me feel a little better about trying to keep her out there with everyone. Just got the meal worms, and making revisions to the coat. I'll have to post my coat revisions for anyone who might need it:)
Thanks again.
I've been reading everyone's posts.... I have a barred rock in a hard molt starting a couple days ago, and having a hard time keeping the coat on since she has no wing feathers anymore. Should I bring her inside (crate her) until she gets through this? She's sleeping in the nesting boxes now...
I'm not ready to submit her worst picture yet... but she's getting there FAST! It looks like someone had a 10-man pillow fight in the run and coop.
I don't have heat in the coop (although that might change because of this) so I thought I'd get on making a coat for her... this is my first try...
1. We went to the police dept - asked who they recommend taking the safety course through.
2. Coyotes around here are between 50 and 80 pounds here... a 20 lb dog does us no good... hand gun, shot gun, rifle....all our best friends:)
Wait or research prolapsed vent... I've seen on here, people using preparation H to help as well as soaking the bottom in nice warm water....
I just would hate to see you cull prematurely... at least, that's me...I'm so attached to my girls
Oh ya...I have the same problem only one difference... I can't tell who the bully is:) It sucks to see a bald chicken everyday. I, too, would like to know what others have done for the head and neck area. Her skin is good and intact but constantly bald. I put hot pick and vasoline on her, hoping...
Agreed...
We waited until week 18 with great results! Everyone was curious, but never roosted in there. When they started squatting for me, I placed wooden eggs in the nesting boxes. Two eggs were laid outside the boxes, then the third started the trend... no problems since.
Is there an odor to the remaining foot tissue? If so, it may be best to take the foot (infection)... the "mushy" part is what I'm concerned about.
I am so glad you went through this with us! I'm dealing with bumble foot right now and am a new chicken mama, so I appreciate your predicament!
Yup - If I had kids... I'd be a pathetic mother with more pictures of my girls!lol!
Here's what I see in the late winter/early spring when we let them into the garden....
my flock playing dead:)
And I had to include my picture of my RIR Kathleen and what looks like her intoxicated look:)
Here's a few picks of Kathleen getting used to her new shoes!
She's jumping on and off of things already - which is alot more than what she was doing with her poor bumble feet!
I cut off the infection and she's got some neosporin on a 1x1 dressing with the shoes over it.
We have them sitting on the 2" part in the coop, and we have them on the 4" part outside the coop in their run... so on wintery, snowy days, they still get up there on the roost to take a look around!
