Check with your local ag department to make sure that you either don't need permits or have the ones you need. They may also have some good advice for you.
I hope he does well, but the size difference and the dark, swollen belly make me think otherwise. There's not much you can do unless a vet is an option, and even a vet may not be able to do much.
I don't like how dark the skin is there considering the down is yellow. It looks swollen as well. You mentioned that this one is smaller than the others. How much smaller? Real runts often have something wrong with them and they rarely make it to adulthood.
It looks like the vent is blocked, though I might be seeing things. If that's the case, you want to soak the rear until the blockage comes off. If it is blocked, this needs to be remedied quickly or it becomes fatal.
Unfortunately, chicks that need assistance out of the shell often need assistance because there is something wrong with it. I don't think there's much you can do, but if it's still alive and hasn't improved, the kindest thing would probably be to cull.
You're not going to get sex linked from a cross of pharaoh and dotted white. The one with the black dot on its head is a dotted white, which is a common colour variant. With a cross of pharaoh and white you are usually going to get pieds (tuxedo, white wing, white splotches) with the...
Possibly. She sounds like a good first choice. You still want to watch her, but it is so cute when you get a hen that will fluff out and spread her wings just a bit to welcome a chick to burrow under her.
I have to break up the oyster shell I use. I have a stainless steel mortar and pestle that does a pretty good job.
You can just use a feeder to put the oyster shell in. I use small ceramic bowls intended for hamster/rat feed that seems to work, though.
How is your moisture control? Usually you get more smell when things are damp. The shavings may be staying dryer because there is more space for air to circulate in them.
This reminds me of a story I heard. I will forever refer to geese as "cobra chickens" due to this.
A foreigner was visiting a farm and there was a goose near the gate that hissed at him and threatened him as he came near. He either didn't know or couldn't remember the word for a goose, so he...
I happen to have a batch of chicks right now. I have two heat lamps going because it's only about 65 in my office. I'm using a leftover piece of pvc pipe to hold the lamp in place. There's a joint on it so it holds it fairly well.
