We’ve had 17 chicks hatch so far! Mostly barnyard mutts, three light Brahmas, and two mysteries. They look like Seramas but they came out of Silkie size eggs.
I just put 12 duck eggs into the hatcher since they went into lockdown. 14 left in the bator. I’m excited to have some tiny quakers!
I still need to catch up with this whole thread, but I wanted to update you all. We had three hatched last night when we went to bed, and 7 hatched when I woke up. Two more have hatched today, five more are pipped. I had to toss most of the serama eggs that were left - they all died, I’m not...
Just as I was about to post, I was watching my little zipper and he hatched right out! And man, he is one talkative little dude! The other pipped babies are all rocking their shells and pecking away at their pips. We have 7 pipped, two that look like they’re just starting to zip. The one that...
So I went out this morning to give the eggs their morning check, no pips... fed all the little buggers in the brooders, went back to peek at the eggs... EXTERNAL PIP!
Dropping in with some good news - we have two internal pips!!
I had to candle every single egg in the hatcher today since the glass on the top fell through. The temp got down to 84 degrees F and I about lost it. I thought they all had died, but thankfully, we only lost two. Two have pipped...
I’ll pick up hydrocortisone cream instead then. Thank you!
My friend said that she’s not able to walk and just flops over when trying to. The visible part of the leg didn’t appear broken when I saw her this past Sunday, but I also only saw her very briefly.
A good friend of mine is giving me one of her lovely Araucana pullets who got mounted very roughly by a roo. After being mounted, the pullet has been unable to walk. When I briefly saw her, her foot was swollen and I presumed broken, but the friend of mine believes her leg is dislocated. I’m...
Mini update: I just snuck three of the surviving silkie eggs into the hatcher too. They all looked to be in lockdown, which I thought was odd for D16, but I put them in there anyways. I’ve never hatched Silkies before - is it normal for them to go into lockdown so early?
Popping in again! The five surviving Serama eggs just went into the hatcher, today is D16. One was completely in lockdown, the others were darn close to it. Hand made a hatcher out of a styrofoam cooler the other day - it’s been regulating the past two days with great success. Got the cooler and...
Unfortunately that’s my thought too. I’m just so sad about it! I’ll have to recount my live eggs and see how many I have left.
Good news, though - the local feed store said I can sell chicks and ducklings there!
Long time no see! I just candled most of my eggs - stopped in the middle of it to make this comment. It’s D14 for my silkie eggs and most of them seem to have died. All other chicken eggs seem perfectly fine. The silkie eggs have no more visible veins, no movement, and a big black blob inside of...
I’ve yet to weigh her, I lost my scale. Likely getting a new one today. She’s 3 days old at most, and she’s believed to be a Pekin. I don’t have a tube yet, I’m stopping at the store soon to see what they have. I’ve never tube fed anything other than kittens before and even then, I wasn’t the...
Does anybody have any tube feeding tips that they can share? I’ve read through numerous articles in preparation of administering prednisone and vitamins to a wry-neck duckling, but if anybody has any bits of advice or knowledge to share, I would greatly appreciate it!
I left this on page 319. I have a lot to catch up on. 😳
Took out the cracked duck egg, it started to look dead a day after we waxed it. The waxed silkie egg is looking good though. All of the other eggs have moving, active embryos and big veins. Those silkie and serama eggs have only a week or...
That could very well be! It’s indented onwards though which is strange. It looks like it was pecked honestly. Who knows. All that I want is for the little baby to hatch!
