Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

I would actually prefer genetic, because it's the only one of this breed I have in there! If its something environmental, like I didn't turn enough or it was too hot or something, the others could all be affected.

Well, a fluke genetic issue then and not something you're going to see in the other chicks that are hatching. I would think they all would have been unable to hatch and you wouldn't see pips if they were in the same condition though...hopefully.

Popping in again! The five surviving Serama eggs just went into the hatcher, today is D16. One was completely in lockdown, the others were darn close to it. Hand made a hatcher out of a styrofoam cooler the other day - it’s been regulating the past two days with great success. Got the cooler and glass (from a picture frame) for $4 from Goodwill. The heat lamp, fan, and hygrometer were already things I had. Fingers crossed for my little nuggets!

The temp and humidity were a little low from me opening and closing the hatcher when I was putting eggs in.

Mini update: I just snuck three of the surviving silkie eggs into the hatcher too. They all looked to be in lockdown, which I thought was odd for D16, but I put them in there anyways. I’ve never hatched Silkies before - is it normal for them to go into lockdown so early?

If your temps were a bit high it can cause early hatching. My Silkies seem to hatch with similar timeframes to many standard breeds.

This is the crew at the moment. I had one chick that was cracked didn’t look pipped and it’s been a long time. I investigated the outer membrane was not broken just the shell cracked. I carefully pulled back some I can now see the chick it is peeping and struggling. The humidity dropped so I’m going to keep checking I chipped away quitea bit of shell with no sign of blood but then saw a bit of blood on the inner membrane. So I left it. I will keep checking but it’s peeping a lot. I’m attaching a picture. There was not any blood on the qtip I was using which makes me wonder if this is just the risidual blood like the blood stained on the other eggs that have hatched. Anyway he’s a picture. If someone could tell me what they think I would appreciate it.
