Get the add a motor. It works great and is very reliable. Sure beats getting up with the sun every day. I noticed too that the hens started laying more consistently with it too.
They will steal your eggs! darn birds kept taking the eggs right out of the coop and in the nesting boxes. I killed one but there were more. I never saw them take the eggs and didn't know what it was until the one got caught in a trap. Even took the fake eggs! Ultimately I put a flap over the...
So I had started to see the egg production going down and one day saw a broken egg in the nesting box. Pretty soon all the egsgs were being stolen. That got me to finally build the run which was needed because the hens were eating all my flowers in the backyard. Well the egg stealing stopped...
I went 6 for 6!!!! Whoooo hooooooo! First time ever! With all the moving and new coop and new chicks they finally hit their stride! I can proudly give away eggs now
If you lived at the equator the hens would naturally have more light all year long. So should people there shut them up and blacken the coop to give them a rest? But hey if you want to feed them and get no eggs that's up to you.

What is your door made from? I notice on the instructions, it says not to use wood because of swelling, etc.
Mine is made of wood and it does swell but I made allowance for that and it works just fine. Love it! Would never go back to going out every morning!
I didn't have luck with the red pepper flakes but adding light to the coop on a timer sure did the trick. It goes on about 4 in the morning and give the hens about 14 hours of light
The move has them not laying. I bought some hens over the summer and they laid the first two days. I thought great! Well then nothing for months. I almost got rid of them. I thing the initial eggs we got were because they were already in the works. They will come around. In fact one hen took...
But the older hens are not using them. I had built a new coop when I got three more chicks. Everyone was moved in at the start of November. The three older hens had nit been laying for a while so the stress of the move didn't matter. The new chicks started laying at the start of December and...
I had a hen that had some bare spots. I noticed another hen started to show signs of a bare spot so I knew the third hen was the offender. I started feeding cat food for a couple weeks and then went with a higher protein feed. If I had cooked eggs or any other protein table scraps I fed it to...
I got my first eggs today too! One was laid early this morning. Late in the afternoon I was preparing their food and water because I am going to be gone for a while and found a soft egg in the middle of the coop. The morning egg was in the nesting boxes. One out of two isn't bad. I am...
I woke up lst night around 3:45 and thought I was hearing an egg song!!??. I had cracked my daughters window which faces the backyard last night and over the baby monitor in her room, sure enough there was definitely some activity. It wasn't the clearest song so I figured there was some...
Three BRs that I got just before 4th of July so at least 23 weeks old. One has had a nice bright red comb and waddle for a while now. Another just got hers and the third on her way. So I check with great anticipation every day. I am hoping the the winter sun or lack of won't affect them...
