We have gotten into the high 20s here so far with no problems.
I read a blog about backyard chickens in Montana and they survive the winters with no heat... and it can be pretty extreme there... so I really haven't worried about heat for mine. I think they can handle really love temps... like...
Yeah, that was my dad's thought... that they were showing the ladies where to lay. However.... I think there are two problems with that idea... one... the ladies were outside and couldn't see the boys. They sneaked off to be alone to do this. Number two - my ladies all lay in the nesting...
Today, two of my 9-month-old cockerels left the flock while they were free-ranging (they have a big coop and outdoor run but I let them out to free-range every day with supervision (too many predators) and went into the coop together. They have never done this before. After a minute or two...
Hello,
I have a BO that has recently decided to go kinda-broody. For a while, she was just sitting on an egg for most of one day, then she'd give up. But she was on one all day yesterday and still on it this morning and possibly was on it since night before last. So, that's 24-36 hours...
ah, gotcha. Yes, she does sound yucky. Sorry about that! I guess she knows that it sounds like a cute joke to the outside world but that you are aware that she's really being mean. That's too bad. She's probably just jealous of you for some reason. I've found jealousy is often what causes...
wow! how cool! Such a smart girl to have figured that out! You HAVE to take pics and post them here ASAP! And then, I would personally move her. I really think those babies would be dead ASAP as soon as they hatch and hop off the edge of the nest. Your girl wants to be a mama so badly...
wouldn't we be seeing saddle feathers by now on the EE and Cochin if they were roos? My Buff Orpington pullets are almost seven months now and have that much or more comb and wattles (as the cochin). And I see no saddle feathers in the pic.
As for the EE... there's not much comb there at all...
Actually, everything I've read about those waterers for chickens is very positive.
I don't use them myself, but people say that the chickens naturally peck them right away because of the shiny metal... and when water comes out, they've learned. It only takes a few minutes. Easy as pie and a...
I'm totally with Fowltemptress.
I took that completely as a loving, joking comment. That is how all my friends and family interact with each other. It's all meant with real love. It's not fake or mean. I think it partially depends where you're from. When I went to college in Upstate New...
We've got 5 EE pullets, 2 BO pullets, 2 Cuckoo Marans pullets, and 3 Cuckoo Marans cockerels. That's 12 chickens total for us.
So:
11,663 + 12 = 11675
I love this thread! Very cool!
our coop is about 100' from our house and with the windows open, we can very clearly hear both our roos and our proud, egg-song-singing hens! With the windows closed, if it's totally quiet in the house and you concentrate, you can kind of hear them. Outside, you can hear them from quite a ways...
yep two things... one: EEs can lay any color of egg, including brown. It's more common than you might think. I know a couple of people who were expecting a blue or green egg and thought their EEs weren't laying, but then they caught them in the act and they were just laying brown eggs! EEs...
my wedding is in just under 6 weeks and I'm about to lose my mind! It's unbelievable how much stuff there is to do! Crazy. I am looking forward to it, but I will also be very happy when it's over!!
OK, I'll guess...
A) Hazel
B) Clover
C) Olive
I have no real clue, but looking at their faces, that seem right to me! When do we get to know the real answer?
thanks to everyone for the replies so far! Keep them coming!
references to other threads on the topic are fine... but I am really looking to create a thread here with as much information in one place as possible. I am aware that there is lots of worming information out there that is spread...
