    what breed is this?

Sorry I'm admittedly bad at taking pictures. No feathery legs really. He's very small too. I'll try for a clearer pic.

    is this an olive egg?

I just don't know. If I had to make an educated guess I'd say the only surviving chick from the summer. She is a cross between an Easter egger mom and golden wyandotte dad. She looks just like her mom. But it would only be a guess I truly have no clue who laid it.

hatch my own eggs or order chicks?

We have fertile eggs and were hoping for more babies than we got this year. We only got 2 :-( I'd like to have more chickens before winter sets in. Should I hatch my own eggs (never done that before) or order chicks from a hatchery? And if I do order chicks can you recommend a good hatchery?

    staggered hatch? help I'm lost!

She's in a partitioned off chicken jail under the nesting boxes right now. She can't get out of that area (approx 2'x6'). But she doesn't even leave the nest to eat, I put down food in front of her. The babies come out from under her a few times a day. One day I closed all the other chickens out...

    staggered hatch? help I'm lost!

I think most were there when she started but a few may have been added later. How long do I let her wait?

    staggered hatch? help I'm lost!

My broody sat on about 20 eggs over 3 weeks ago. She has barely moved. She's hatched 2 chicks, about 36ish hours apart.that was a few days ago. She's still sitting and I don't know if I should move her. Does she know something I don't about the rest of the eggs? Could there be this many days...

If she hasn't gone back to sitting on her eggs by morning then I should try putting her back where she was?

    moving a broody hen

I've got a young buff orp (under a year) sitting on 5 eggs. She's been on them for about a week. I was worried about where she was nesting so I moved her this evening to a small private coop. So far she won't go back to sitting on the eggs. It's been about an hour. How long until I should worry...

is there any such thing as organic cracked corn?

I've been treating them everyday, maybe I shouldn't bother? They also get scraps from my kitchen.

is there any such thing as organic cracked corn?

Or at least non-gmo? I feed the girls organic pellets but I've been unable to find a treat option. Do they not need scratch/cracked corn/ sunflower seeds everyday? I've been doing black oil sunflower seeds in hopes it was not gmo bc I'm sure the cracked corn is. What do you feed your girls?

    Rooster to protect the ladies

One of my roos is a golden laced wyandotte. I've had him since he was about 6 weeks old. I don't know if it had made a difference or not but I've handled him every day. He is the sweetest boy. I was warned that his father was a mean old bird. Maybe the handling made a difference?

    too many roos!

I've ended up with 5 males in my flock of 19. We've already eaten one roo. I'm stuck on what to do. On one hand I don't need this many and they are more mouths to feed. But on the other hand they haven't done anything to deserve the stew pot. They are good boys. I know that my thinking is skewed...

how can I tell who is laying?

I have a vague idea but I'd like to know what egg belongs to what chicken.

Anyone else still ridiculously excited when they find eggs in the coop everyday? It never fails to bring a smile to my face :-)
