Something scared the entire flock and sent everyone flapping/running for cover. I think she ran into something. There are no abrasions or cuts.
The vet said she has some soft tissue damage to her neck but her vertebrae are in their correct places.
I’ll try to take a picture of it later. Right now she’s crated and I don’t want to handle her unnecessarily. I guess “seen” was the wrong terminology. Sorry!
Have you had any experience with neck trauma in chickens?
Good morning everybody. Another question for the experts.
This morning the ladies were in a state of panic. Thinking something had gotten into their yard I tore out the back door and across our property. Everything looked normal except the latched gate to their area was wide open. There was no...
Last post on the subject. I finally spoke with a person listed as a Contact for the disease response. He said that the vaccination does not afford complete immunity. If a vaccinated bird contracts the disease there are two options: bird will catch get sick and die. OR, bird catches it, immune...
Ok. Called Zoetis, the manufacturer. Here’s what they said.
Birds who have been given a Mareks vaccine can still carry the Virus and shed. It’s in the herpes family so it like to play immunological hide and seek.
Because Newcastle’s vaccine is live it will cause some shedding in the vaccinated...
The only article I can find, at least currently, mentions this as a problem with the Mareks vaccination. This vaccine only prevents the growth of tumors and paralysis that accompanies the disease. The birds can still acquire the disease and actively shed.
With Newcastle’s, especially if using...
Goody!!! We must think a little alike as those were some of the articles I looked at last night. Except the first one. I can’t log in for the whole article so I read just the abstract.
Anyways, I have the active B1 with LaSota strain. At this point I’m thinking it might be a good idea...and...
Thanks for the response. I think you are right. It’s one drop in nose or eye. The water method is for people with LOTS of birds.
I poked around the world of google last night. I guess if the vaccine takes and titers are high it’s preventative. If the vaccine takes and titers are low it will...
Would it be easier to do intranasal administration?
Here is the back story: law enforcement busted a cock fighting collection that was also infected with Newcastle’s Disease. It has now made its way south (towards us). The last reported case occurred approximately 100 miles north of us.
If...
Howdy guys. I’m trying to figure out how to vaccinate 8 chickens from a vial that contains enough doses for 1000 chickens. If I mix it according to the directions would that be too much in their water.
Any advice would be so appreciated.
Thanks for the response. I feed back some eggs too and give meal worms. I’ve only been keeping chickens for a year and really don’t know much.
I’ve had all sorts of mammals as pets and livestock...birds are so different. I guess I worry because as their keeper it’s my responsibility to the very...
I grabbed her immediately after the sneeze and had a listen. I didn’t hear anything concerning. I’ve also been out to check on her several times since I posted the question and she seems ok.
What do you supplement with to increase protein? They do have access to layer pellets in addition to...
