Good morning everybody. Another question for the experts.

This morning the ladies were in a state of panic. Thinking something had gotten into their yard I tore out the back door and across our property. Everything looked normal except the latched gate to their area was wide open. There was no breach to the perimeter of their fencing. The roof to their yard and coop was also intact. No blood. No feathers. It seemed a simple case of Chicken Little and the sky is falling.

45 minutes later went to give them their morning salad and noticed one of my hens was isolating herself and holding her head oddly. This is not wry neck. I can feel a weird bulge, feels almost like a tuffy rope dog toy. Her crop is empty as it should be first thing in the morning. She showed interest in food but it seemed like eating was painful.

Currently she is in sick bay awaiting her vet appointment. Anyone seen a neck injury like this?

I’ll try to take a picture of it later. Right now she’s crated and I don’t want to handle her unnecessarily. I guess “seen” was the wrong terminology. Sorry!

Have you had any experience with neck trauma in chickens?

Something scared the entire flock and sent everyone flapping/running for cover. I think she ran into something. There are no abrasions or cuts.

The vet said she has some soft tissue damage to her neck but her vertebrae are in their correct places.

Okay, good! That means she may just be suffering a bit of temporary nerve damage. Giving her a vitamin E oil 400iu capsule once a day will help repair nerve damage. Keep it up until she's better.

Thank you! She’s doing much better. Still a bit stiff, but the swelling is down and she is more active.
