Upon closer look, she has a huge wound filled with these. I did some research and it appears to be fly strike (maggots). They are too far in her that we don't think she can be saved.
...get more photos?
If this is under the Vent, then likely its Flystrike.
Continue to care for it like you are doing (wound care, checking for maggots too).
If it's the Vent itself, is she able to poop? When was the last egg?
Care for the Vent by keeping it coated with ointment or oil...
We washed her in warm Epsom salt water. The black area is hot to touch. We applied antiseptic and triple antibiotic cream.she has tums and electrolytes in her water. She is isolated inside and under a heat lamp now resting. I’ll post more pics in the morning.Thank you for responding and being...
First thing I think of is fly strike. Did you ever see any maggots? Is her abdomen bloated?
Keep her clean, and in a clean area. Apply a triple antibiotic oinment.
Could you get some more pictures in better lighting, so we can see more of what's going on?
...in a dog crate so the other chickens can't peck her and watch carefully for flystrike - this is flies laying eggs in the wound, hatching into maggots which must be removed. I would be afraid covering with an apron could cause infection as the wound can't breathe, but I could be wrong about...
...scrambled egg or bits of tuna or cottage cheese for protein are very good for her. Let us know how she is getting along. Flies can be dangerous because of maggots and flystrike, so keep her away from them, but leave it open to air. A loose T shirt cover might be good during visits with her...
I am a farm sitter and sit for a lot of people with chickens that worry about their flock. They are your feathered babies after all! Neighbors and teenagers might not do the job sufficiently. If you hire someone, make sure they have experience with poultry. They will be able to assess the...
I am so irate right now. We found out who the dog that attacked our chickens belongs to. She came by last night and said sorry which doesn't feel like anything after losing 5 chickens and still having 3 injured. Even more so after finding out a bit ago that it has killed quite a few other...
...put Bella down. I think it's the best thing for her unfortunately. They all made it through the night but she is wheezing more and she now has maggots in her wound. She's the one with a punctured lung 😢. The other three are still doing alright and are still maggot free. Hopefully it stays...
...Unfortunately I had to deal with dry strike already twice since June. I checked her other wound and the other girls wounds and they all look maggot free thank goodness. Hopefully they stay that way. I think I'll be able to clean Bellas wound a bit more than I have when I was checking it a...
So sorry you lost one. :hugs
Continue to check the wound where maggots were, if flies got to it there could still be eggs that will hatch. Check several times a day for several days to make sure you get them all. I would also check the others just in case, you don't need to deal with that on...
...back wound isn't too deep but I noticed that her other wound on her right side around her thigh is deeper than I thought it was and found maggots. Got her flushed out really good and I think i got all the maggots out🤞 and got ointment on both. She's still dragging her left wing but I'm...
...seen before EVERYWHERE in it (though they may have been in there before then, I don't pay much attention). i'm talking it looks like when maggots get ahold of something dead- I could HEAR them scurrying around in the bag. a few days later (today) I Google it and they're granary weevils. I...
...home to. I know I’m a little obsessive about cleaning the coop daily, but I see horror stories on FB threads. Nasty vents from fly strike, maggots and bot fly faces…all the things. Am I worrying needlessly? My ten do a number on their droppings board every night. I can’t imagine what a week’s...
