    Homemade rooster collar

I have to move somewhere where my roosters will need to be quieter. Since I have twelve I can't afford to buy the real deal no crow collar for all of them. I bought some double sided velcro at Home Depot. 1 1/2 inch wide. This was too wide for the bantams, so I cut it in half lengthwise for...

    Rehoming goats

These photos are a couple of years old. Top picture is Ramon. He was a bottle baby, so I don't think he knows he's a goat. I got him when he was a few days old from some people who said he was one of three kids in a litter and mom rejected him. Bottom picture is Seven and Mack. I got them...

    Rehoming goats

It does sound cool, but then I'm thinking: I'd need a truck and portable tall fencing and portable shelter and water. I don't know. Be a huge investment. Might be cheaper to buy mom's place. ;) I'd love to let you have them, but I'm not sure it's worth paying to send them so far. I don't even...

    Rehoming goats

Thanks so much for all the supportive answers and even an offer to take them. I'm in NE Kansas, near the Kansas City area. I didn't even think about leasing them out. That's brilliant. Of course, the little one can easily jump a five plus foot fence. I've seen him do it. :)

    Rehoming goats

Hi, all: I have three wethers I must rehome. My mother died in February, and I can't afford to buy her place, and there's no room for them at my place. I feel physically ill at the thought of giving these goats up. They've been pets. Two of them in particular are very bonded, and I'd like them...

Good books on raising chickens for someone who doesn't read well

Hi: I'm not sure this is the best forum for this question. Please move it if there's a better place. I'm a librarian who has had a request from a patron. He wants a book on raising chickens, but he doesn't read well. Can someone recommend a good book on chickens written in very simple...

    Courthouse rooster - what breed?

I guess the Leghorn can have a rose comb. All of mine have had single combs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leghorn_chicken

    Courthouse rooster - what breed?

The Bourbon County, Kansas, courthouse has a rooster hanging around. Is it a White Leghorn? I have a White Leghorn rooster, and the courthouse rooster looks a lot bigger than mine. Their combs are different too.

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

I haven't seen any opossums for days, so I can't grab tails or wave fly swatters at them. I know they're there, but ever since the day I hit one with a stick three times - and it didn't faint, btw - I've only seen them once, and they all ran for cover immediately. Now they must hide when they...

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

No grandkids either. :) For touching the fence? No. For killing a opossum? Yup. I was standing behind a guy all decked out in hunting gear at the gas station a few days ago, and I came very close to asking him if hang out in my barn and kill opossums for me. :)

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

I'm becoming more and more convinced that's what happened here. There's nothing on the trail cam this morning except me setting it up last night and the chickens getting up this morning. I had intermittent problems with my fence for a while. It wasn't working or was very weak, and I wasn't...

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

I noticed there were those little ceramic knobs for electric wire on the coop. I kind of wondered why. Maybe he had an electric wire on it. I don't remember. I do remember we never had a predator in that coop.

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

Is it possible something else killed it and the opossum came later and ate part of it? For the longest time, there were no bodies. That's why I was convinced it was something big coming and taking the chickens away to eat. I've found three bodies out of maybe 20 chickens.

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

That's my all-time favorite chicken Production. She was a Production Red, and when I named her, I was trying not to get too attached, so I just called her by her breed. Didn't work. I got attached. I saved her life twice. Once, I caught a dog in the act of attacking her. I thought she would die...

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

I just came back from the barn. There were three opossums in there. I don't know if I should cry or scream. On a happier note, I counted 32 chickens this evening. I still don't see my Buckeye. I looked at all 32 pretty closely, and she's not one of them.

Losing lots of chickens to some unknown predator

Some favorite trail cam videos. A coyote. (This was the first time I used it, and the infrared light reflecting from some small limbs almost obliterate the view. He's there on the left.) A fox or coyote. Our friend the opossum. The only unauthorized animal I've caught inside the fence...
