Was she vaccinated for Coccidiosis? I have had a few die from this, and it comes on quite quickly, and she is at the right age for it.

    Rooster stopped crowing? Why?

Not that I am complaining, but our rooster has stopped crowing. We started bringing him indoors in the evenings and letting him out during the day. He crowed while he was indoors at night, but now he has stopped all together. Last night I forgot to bring him in, and he never crowed. Does anyone...

    What cities allow goats?

Help! I am making a list of all the cities that allow goats. I am speaking pro-goat at town hall tonight. So far I have Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nashville, St. Paul, St. Louis, Pasadena, and New York. If you know of more please help me out. I'm hoping to change some laws...

Not to bend the rules, but does anyone her do goats as well?

I think I might print this thread and show it to the Board of Aldermen as well. We are discussing it at a town hall meeting next Tuesday. Luckily, I live in a small town in the most progressive bubble in NC (aka: Paris of the Piedmont) and I have a lot of support. I am so excited about these...

What kind of chicken is my rooster?

He came from McMurray, in the mixed bantam package. He was the only one like this, others were mostly frizzles, cochins and brahmas.

What kind of chicken is my rooster?

I think he is s D'uccle, but not sure. He is a bantam, has a beard, feathered feet, no wattles, but the coloring is pretty solid and red. Super-weet fellow with a lovely crow. Any ideas. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1269897&l=9a67088bfd&id=769158683

Anyone due March 15! Keep track here with others!

How can you tell? I am just starting to learn the basics. My roo is a D'uccle, I believe, and female is a black bantam cochin. So far, the two babies I have are black, taking after mama.

    I Have NO Self Control!!!

I just bought more chicks. This thread made me want to even more. Its kind of like when you quit smoking, and then you start talking about it, and then, its all over. I just bought 25 Silkies and 20 Lakenvelders. I am planning on selling most of them on Craigslist though. I love to raise them...

Not to bend the rules, but does anyone her do goats as well?

Thanks for all of the advice. We have decided that next week, when the weather is nice, we will be taking our sweet girl to the farmer's market to get signatures. I am going to make her a coat that says "I'm a perfect pet" or Goats make great pets".

I'm so relieved to hear you had a hatch this morning. It gives me hope for my straggler.

Anyone due March 15! Keep track here with others!

I'm so sorry. My first baby just hatched out. I got it on video, and I was able to call my neighbor, who home schools her 7-year-old daughter, to come over and watch the hatch with me. Anika was so excited and thrilled to watch a chick hatch. I am still worried about the other egg. Still no...

I am waiting on two to hatch. I am also on day 22. One has started breaking through, the other I am not sure about. The waiting is tough.

Not to bend the rules, but does anyone her do goats as well?

We have recently adopted an adult pair of fainting goats, an absolutely love them. We were snitched on though by an un-neighborly neighbor (quiet goats that have never gotten out...someone just had a vendetta out for us) and we are now going through a process of getting a petition signed in our...

    I Have NO Self Control!!!

I'm there with you. Hatching will remedy the problem. My boyfriend and I joke about how for most couples, a few beers and a romantic night might end with a human baby, but for us it is trouble, because we will order exotic chicks from a hatchery under those circumstances. Now, we have a...

    Pet chickens vs. food source

We have chickens that are our layers, and then we also raise birds for meat as well. It really gives me satisfaction to know that I have given an animal a good free-range life, and that when it comes time to slaughter, we will be as gentle and considerate of the bird's departure. We have a new...

    Dog mauled chickens. Bad.

I dealt with a similar issue last year. I had 5 injured chickens after a dog got in our coop and killed 8. Several had very bad skin tears. I mixed up a saline solution and rinsed the wounds first. I gave the chickens stitches where needed with a sterilized sewing needle and cotton thread (it...

    Posts are scaring me!

One thing I would watch out for with that many chicks are little ones getting caught in a corner and getting trampled. I have had this happen a few times when I have gotten chicks from McMurray, and it is usually the first or second day when they are still really small. Now we set up several...
