I am fully integrating my 8-week-old chicks in with my mature flock this week. (They've been living in a segregated space in the coop for 4 weeks now, so hoping the final integration goes smoothly!) I have read enough threads to know that I need to remove the layer feed and switch everyone...
After some more research here I think the problem is either impacted or sour crop. I vomited her as directed in the article, and A LOT of gross liquid came up, as did 2 pieces of grass. I will give her water with probiotics, but I am not certain whether I should give her the dampened feed as...
Adding to say that all other hens seem completely fine. I have pulled her from the coop and put her in a crate in the house. I don't even know what possible diagnosis to research.
Found one of my 3-year-old hens puffed up, lethargic, and isolated when I went to close the coop. She seemed fine this morning. Her crop appears full but is not hard to the touch. She is drooling a foul-smelling yellow liquid. Is there anything I can do to help her? She is very ill. This...
Bumping this thread...thanks for the good information! My neighbor lost 2 healthy chickens last night to gnats. I didn't know it was even possible until she called me. My girls were 100% normal yesterday, but today no one would leave the coop. They started shaking their heads late this...
I am cleaning out the fridge and have a few pineapple hunks I'd like to share with my girls. I've looked over the lists of "ok/not ok" treats but don't see pineapple listed either way. Does anybody know if it's safe to feed to chickens? Thanks in advance!
Thanks so much for the help, ChirpyChicks1! I felt pretty certain that it would be fine on the floor in the litter, but wasn't feeling entirely comfy about the poop boxes. I think I will go ahead and mix the barnlime with the Sweet PDZ to save some coin.
If anyone else has an opinion, please...
I am going to spring clean my coop this weekend. I have a poop box under my roosts that I've always filled with Sweet PDZ. (Copied from the awesome poop box thread...mine is exactly like the pics in the first post.) When I was at Theisen's buying new shavings and PDZ yesterday, I noticed bags...
KilnChick, pine is ok...it's cedar that's a no no.
I got two more eggs yesterday. I believe one was from Dottie (same size/shape, and in the same nesting box), but I found the other one outside near the waterer. I think it must have been a surprise to whomever laid it, as the placement...
My girl Dottie got it right yesterday...she laid a perfect little egg in the nesting box!!!! Hooray, the first real egg!
A couple of the other girls are squatting in a more "serious" way, so I think we'll be seeing more eggs soon. When all 15 start laying consistently it will seem like an...

jtbass, I use pine shavings on the floor of the coop, but I put hay in the nesting boxes after reading that the shavings stick to the bloom on the eggs. I wonder if the girls would be more comfortable if I replaced the hay with shavings, though...something to consider. Thanks for spurring an...
Hi all,
I am so excited to join in the egg-waiting game! I have 15 girls (6 different breeds), and they were 18 weeks old yesterday. On Friday night I went out to close up the coop after they had roosted, and I found a smushy egg in the poop box under Dorothy, one of my Dominiques. I was so...
