You're welcome! And, in support of my point, it's 21 degrees this morning. The chickens refuse to leave their coops. The ducks happily ran out of their warm shelter and are lying on the cold ground after dunking their heads in the water dishes.
Yesterday, it was the season's first snowfall, light and fluffy. Six hours later, the snow was slushy and ugly. Today, the leftover snow is crusty, annoying and has to be cleaned off the deck and walkways.
I like your morning view So Much Better -- green grass and adorable little chickies!!
I have runner ducks in North Central Iowa where my winters are likely as cold as yours. I put away baby pools for winter and make sure the ducks have water in insulated dog dishes that are deep enough for them to get their heads dunked. There are multiple dishes so I can rotate thawed and frozen...
Jim, I think it's fine to put the stuff in your will -- as long as no one gets it for a Very Long Time!!
I bought an Urban Coop off Craiglist years ago. The seller said everyone else tried to talk him down to the point that he would have burned it before he sold it to them. I am as much a...
I am so sorry for the loss of your hen. The manner in which she died sounds incredibly traumatic and even more heartbreaking because it was your first loss. Watching a chicken die is beyond awful when you don't know any way to help her.
It sounds as if you did everything any thorough, caring...
Sounds like those wandering chickens found the perfect person to take them in. And, you, like so many of us, found chickens to be a great way to relieve the stresses of the day.
There are plenty of BYC folks who will be delighted to help you with any challenges or questions and cheer your...
My "moment" is when I traveled to a farm during the first big outbreak of avian flu, when 4-H'ers couldn't show their chickens at county fairs. I went with the intention of bringing home THREE point-of lay hens.
I came home with FOUR. It was a sign of things to come.
Currently, I have 23...
My naming protocol usually ranges from names chosen for the bird's country of origin to TV or book characters.
Current flock is Camille (of French heritage); Evie, Audrey and Valentina (actually American TV); Isabel, Ophelia and Ursula (the I.O.U. girls); Alice and Cora (sisters from "The Last...
I try to be as positive as possible, but it's been tough recently, too many deaths, human and animals.
My sister's friend, who co-founded the community Halloween party with her 20 years ago, died; his funeral was the same day as the party. Bobby was a lifelong entertainer -- a singer, dancer...
Sometimes, I've had to climb inside the run to encourage members of that flock -- who are known as "the party girls" because they like to stay out late -- to get into the coop.
Since I've hung the heavy duty weather panel, more of the run is dark and they seem to accept that it's bed time on...
I am SO jealous -- you have incredibly adorable baby chicks and it's spring in Australia!! Winter is creeping in here, and I am already tired of it.
Thanks for posting photos of your sweet babies! And, the sassy one :)
The only toy my chickens ever appreciated was a plastic cylindrical tube that could be filled with mealworms and had slots so the hens could roll it and pick out the treats. However, please see previous posts regarding poop and dust particles.
Hope you enjoy researching breeds over the winter...
I took my first Keeshond to puppy school to learn socialization skills. It seemed to be going well as she was happily playing with a Sheltie -- who soon had blood all over his white chest.
His person and I freaked out -- turned out he had lost a baby tooth while he and Holly were playing...
Lisa, sorry to learn about your mother-in-law's passing. Even when you realize it's time for someone to go, it's hard to lose them.
My sister's Halloween party co-founder passed away last week, and his funeral was the same day as the party. Bobby was a musician, singer, dancer and a lifelong...
I hesitated buying from Omlet because it's so pricey (you're lucky to have found a used one!) and the stuff looks more like kids' playground equipment than a chicken coop. But, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages and, most importantly, the hens like it.
For the first winter, I bought...
