    no heat no light brooder

The best part is 2:15 as the kitten dives in. It stays and shows up occasionally. Cute! I'm not sure what he's using in those sacks, but day-old chicks need heat, so there's something unless the temp there is in the low 90s. 100% on the no brooder light at night!! They vaccinate for a...

3 week chicks, acting fine but suddenly dying

No appetite decreased, water consumption did increase. They've been fine until they're not then they just suddenly convulse and drop. They have been fluffing their feathers out so I did adjust the heat lamp prior to this. I may need to raise it significantly higher maybe? That's why I'm also...

    Supporting my new little bantam

Hi everyone - this is my and my husband's second time getting chicks (last time 2 years ago). This year we ordered 4 chicks from Meyers: an olive egger, splash maran, cochin bantam, and lavender ameraucana. They shipped on Monday and USPS did a fantastic job getting them here, I was able to pick...

    Hello All

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined. I'm going to be that person... Those guides are just that, very loose guides. I have raised chicks out in a coop when temps dipped into the low 20s at night. Those chicks were not kept in an environment where some or even most of the area was...

    no heat no light brooder

There absolute is no heat. They used to be called hatbox brooders, although recently I’ve heard them called fire less brooders also. The box is insulated, so retains the body heat from the chicks. Obviously there is a minimum number of chicks where this is possible.

42% morality rate at 72 hrs

Yeah we have tried all the above lol, we just purchased and incubator and we will try it that route.

42% morality rate at 72 hrs

I think it's just tricky the way they say it, but they def only mean for a few hours (and kinda depending the ambient temp). I saw a video that breaks down this exact thing (cackle and them recommending a higher temps), but I think the way cackle explains it is missing some nuances... Video...

    Heat lamp vs electric brooder

Thank you so much!!! The area I was going to keep them stays around 60 degrees as well :)

Thistlewick Smallholding - Chickens & Sheep (for now)

So I think this is possibly the duck egg?? I don't know it just feels different in my hand lol Here are both mystery eggs in comparison. Smaller one 2 days ago. Bigger one today. It's giant for a pullet egg so I don't think it's a pullet. Maybe Custard fixed her egg maker. This is her...

    This chick needs a name!

This baby was a singleton - the only one to hatch out of 6. I've been spending a lot of time with her (I wing sexed her at 2 days old and think female but who knows) because I don't want her to be lonely. She loves toothbrush chin scratches and she ate a few mosquitos while she was sitting in my...

Do they still need a Heat Lamp

How many chicks? I usually have 15-25 chicks at a time, use a brooder plate which is removed when they are about 3 weeks and they are raised in the coop with outside lows and highs mid 30s to 40s. If you only have a couple, less than six, you might want to have a heat source for them at night...

I hatched this chick without an incubator and this is what it looks like.

I would set up a brooder box with heat and stop trying to heat the whole room. A light bulb can be enough heat around 95 degrees in a small enough area for your duckling as it will need to escape that heat after its dry and on its feet. What do you have ready for feed for your duckling? I would...

    Brooder set up suggestions

We plan on getting 20 (buckeye!) day old chicks mailed to us shortly. I have been trying to figure out what the best option is for a brooder. I found an galvanized garden bed 8x4x2 with a cover on Amazon (https://a.co/d/e9kjizP) but I'm worried that will be too small for 20 chicks when they are...

Carport to Coop Conversion in FL

So far, we are truly enjoying this adventure. The flock consists of 30 ISA Brown, 10 White Leghorn, 10 Black Australorp and 5 Guinea fowl. They are happily growing up (quickly) in the garage where we devised an expandable brooder for them including a swing, a dome, a dust bath and food and...

Help with designing a walk in coop/shed

Lol, you are benefitting from the myriad mistakes I made in ignorance in having my coop built! Oh and foundation? I had my coop set on bare ground here in SE MO which gets LOTS of rain and moisture, bad plan, very bad plan. I am originally from NW NM where the ground is dry and stays put like...

    All chicks with impacted crop?

We removed the food at night and in the morning they were much smaller! Pine shaving bedding, the same we use for the girls outside They don't have grit, I was under the understanding that when they are getting just starter and nothing else they don't need grit. Is that incorrect?

Which model camera do you use for your brooder?

I need to monitor a brooder from about 25' away. I'm looking for: continuous live stream in color that I can watch on my computer monitor (not phone) sound overnight recording local storage (not cloud) weatherproof color night vision no glow (no red light indicating it's operating) no...

    Wrath's Marans

I built a room without a view. The 7 boys spent their first night in it last night. Lots to do yet like build poop boards and add a window and pop door. Needs lights and a few more tweaks here and there, but it frees up much more space in Kongs coop. This will double as the new brooder room or...

Do new chicks need a light at night in the brooder?

No. If it is dark they aren't going anywhere. Chicks stay under broody hens all night and a hen does not have any artificial light. They do not go looking for food and water at night. If you supply light they will but they will be fine without light. I always put my chicks in the brooder...
