    Coop Base

Building a new chicken coop&run. Was worried about drainage and was thinking has anyone dug down 4-5” and installed 2/3” of chipped rock for drainage then the rest with sand or top soil? Was going to run a French drain around the coop itself but was thinking about adding stone as I’ll have to...

    Changing Coop

Hi all, Over the last few years, I've had 4 chickens (2 sets of 2) and all of them have died of the same thing - not sure what it is, but thinking Coccidiossis... I decided that I didn't want to use the chicken coop I had been using thinking that it could be something in there causing the...

    Uk weather and drainage, flooding

So I live in the south of the UK and the weather has been near constant rain for what feels like months. I have 2 Eglu (one big, one small) coops which are great for keeping the birds dry and easy to clean. These are both housed in a 3m x 3m run with an overhead roof. The sides of the coop are...

Granny's gone and done it again

Hope everyone had a good day. Youngest daughter was here and we got a lot of things done in the yard and coops. Pa is going to build another nest box tomorrow. He and I can get it put in the coop. Our pullets will be laying in another month or so. MC, I have the same problem in the fall, sinus...

What do you use for your walkways? (it's a soggy mess over here!)

Good morning! We've been getting a LOT of rain. Our new coop site is experiencing some growing pains. We never had an issue with soggy walkways/paths, and figured a quick fix would be to throw down some leftover pine shavings. That's just made it worse. We use pine pellets in the run, and we...

Check out my new SE Texas coop design. Opinions welcome

Going to be legit! Loving all of the new grading and drainage, as well as the pavers to get the wood off the ground. I just finished my first coop/run and we placed everything on cinder blocks. Enjoy the process. Do you have chickens right now?

Run on gravel; how to prepare

Photos of the space? I wouldn't put plywood on the gravel, it would likely mold/mildew and hold in moisture. You still want some drainage. Is the 2X6 space for dust bathing? If so, fill that in with a little mulch, sand and/or peat moss. Maybe a mix of all 3. A lot depends on your...

Chicken is wheezing like a kazoo

I let them free range. I have fans in the coop and it has sand. The older group just got over fowl pox. She sounds mucusy now, she sounds like snores when she breaths. No drainage. I gave them all electrolytes. I did add pullets about 2 weeks ago. I will watch her inside and see what happens...

Is dirt and sand mixed good for coop run?

Welcome! Good drainage is most important, and then dirt is fine, and especially if it's clay, some sand would be good too. Adding shavings or wood chips, dried leaves, whatever (not mostly black walnut!) will make a very good run substrate, and you can throw the coop cleanout shavings there...

    Oyster shells molding?

Not on topic but this thread is 9 months old. Anyway, are all of your nest boxes these crates?

    Rooster lost his voice

Do you have a picture of him? Is he gasping for air? Does he run around and seem to be fairly active? How is the odor and ventilation in the coop? Have you seen any bubbles in his eyes, nasal drainage, or swallowing of mucus?

    New chicken lady 😃

Welcome to BYC! I'm also in east Texas but not deep et. A big open air coop run combo covered top to bottom with hardware cloth is your best bet. Deep shade and good drainage are important for our hot, humid summers and torrential rains.

Granny's gone and done it again

Granny Smith with the caramel dip. :drool I haven't made fried apples in forever. Mom always knew what kind to buy as I liked them chunky. Not applesauce. and fried into a biscuit with glaze on top.

Official BYC Poll: What Are You Doing to Protect Your Flock From Bird Flu (H5N1) Infection?

A very late reaction to a question. This person hasn’t been around in 2025. But bc messages are read by others too I want to make clear that using bleach on soil is not okay. Just take away the poop and make a drainage. Bird flu vanishes in the spring when temps get higher in the sun 🌞 . Its...

    8x10 Shed to Coop Repurpose

This an 8x10 shed that I'm repurposing into a coop. It currently sits on a wood foundation that needs to go since it has been harboring at least one opossum that I see occasionally (my dog chase it for kicks) and I've see a few mice come and go on occasion. None of this was a problem until I got...

    Dust bath

Drill drainage holes in the sidewall of an old tire and fill the center with sand, ash and whatever else your hens like. If it needs rain protection, a simple tarp or piece of plywood/roofing panel generally works well.

Help - what kind of bedding in chicken run?

Thank you for your response and correction of my use of the word "hens." Multitasking is not my strength. The starter coop is listed below. We adapted it and added two more windows that, when opened, have 1/2 in hardware cloth. I will not address nest boxes as they will not be in this coop...

    Coop location /space

Any location that's low lying or collects mud and rainwater is a bad choice, as you will have odor and sanitation issues. The best spot for a coop and run would be sitting a little higher up, with good drainage. Depending on your climate ample shade during the summer is generally ideal...

Where to place the chicken coop

I had chickens in Northwest Arkansas, similar climate. My first consideration is drainage. Your coop and run need to be where water drains away from it, not to it. If it stays dry life is a lot easier. If it stays wet life can get very bad. You will see some pretty hot weather in summers...

Hardware cloth and healthy chicken feet!

I live in southern Indiana, and I'm going to be setting up my first coop and run and getting my first chickens. Here in Indiana, (1) we have a lot of clay in the soil, and (2) we have predators coming at our chickens from 360 degrees. That means 360-degree hardware cloth around the chickens'...
