Sadly, yes, blecky slars, and we had this experience just recently out in the chicken/duck area. We thought the baby chicks (there were two) were safe w/the mother BUT one of the babies jumped up on the mother, into the water, and drowned.
At first we could not figure out how it got in until...
We feed both our ducks and chickens organic layer pellets. They don't like the mash. When they were babies we used a starter mash for both.
The ducks will grow much faster then the chicks but should not be put outside until 4 weeks old. They normally get oil from their mother but when ordered...
Hi Chickiee,
We have 9 Orpingtons (1 Orpington rooster) and 6 Astrolops along with 6 white layer ducks (and 1 male); and 6 Cayuga ducks all in the same area. Each have their own "home" - a duck house complete w/pool and a hen house w/roosts.
We had the chickens first and added the ducks a...
Interesting site about Cayuga ducks:
http://www.albc-usa.org/cpl/waterfowl/cayuga.html
Currently have 6 Cayuga's and 6 White Layers - both very friendly. Cayuga's are definitely smaller.
They love spinach or any kind of green food. We had them on chicken mash but they are now on pellets...
Hi Scott,
I'm located not too far from you in NH just the other side of Nashua. Hope all goes well with your move. Brookline is a nice area. Use to live next door in Pepperell, MA.
We have, a variety, of 9 Orpington hens, 1 Orpington rooster, and 6 (3 week old) baby Astralorps at the moment...
We have 6 babies... pretty friendly. Will sit on you and love meal worms. We've had them since a day old. I wonder if that is why? Ours are 3 weeks old at the moment. We raised our Orps from babies too. Some are more skittish then others.
Bought them to go in with our Orps... seemed like a good...
Hi kilby,
Thanks for the info on Anita's in BC and what you are feeding your birds. I'll have to do some research on the yogurt. We give ours ricotta cheese.... I wonder what the difference is? That is their nightly treat w/whole grain spag w/meal worms (their favorite) and how we get them...
I could not find anything on their site that states they are "organic certified". My guess is the marigold is what is giving the really yellow yolks. I could be wrong.
All "Natural" does not = "Organic". Depends what you want - I don't want soy or fish meal in my feed. Neither are truly...
Buff, Black, Blue, White - we have a real mix of them. The buffs are the babies we bought after picking up the others at a farm in Montpelier, VT. They wanted to get rid of them because the thought the flock was "spent"... interesting enough they are still laying for us.
Included with the VT...
"You are right. I always find something "lacking" with the mass produced feeds, but then I am only over thinking it and thankfully don't have allergies at this point!"
Hi Cindy,
Too true about "over thinking" some things. So talking about "over thinking" ... I decided to search this...
Hi Cindy,
I would really be appreciative of links to the sites. I'm at a loss here in NE. You are in "Amish" Country. I am not. I am from VT. My husband is from NZ (New Zealand) and born/raised on a 700 hundred hector farm but living in NH. They raised sheep. We in VT, did not... it was more...
"THANKS sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo(breath)ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!"
You are more then welcome. I'm just trying to share what I am "learning" based on my searches.
I don't want to hurt/annoy/whatever anyone else! I am just trying to share! I hope you find something in these...
"If the feed is certified organic there cannot be more than a small percentage of non organic ingredients in it. It's something like 5%. Organic feed does not have to say non GMO, as it is part of the organic standards to not use GMO. Don't know why you would have a 50-50 chance of organic...
...managed to grab one then all the others began chasing her - totally ignoring all the other tomatoes still on the ground. It was funny to watch this process until all the tomatoes disappeared!
*Please note: Edited today based on Cindy's post - thanks again Cindy... I don't want to mislead...
