My bantam want broody so I put four fertilised eggs under her in her own nest box. She has a coop and run to herself now that the others can't access.
We've had a week of her being superb but today when I got up she was standing outside the coop looking pretty sick - tail down, eyes half...
I have a mental white Sussex bantam! She's highly strung and referred to as "the crazy one" of the flock. She's my only bantam and she's not at the bottom of the pecking order - no reason to be crazy!
Two things - she has a weird iris...
Should I be worried? All the rest of my girls have...
My orpingtons were over a year old when they started laying. Both started at the same time! I still have no idea why! They were around other chickens and definitely spoilt :)
UPDATE: Both hens are like different girls! Doing really well just from treatment with the Johnsons Mite & Lice powder. I completely treated their wooden hen house with pest control spray and put a little DE in their sand bath. Still two more sessions to go with the powder, but all looks good so...
Glad I read this thread before messing about with my Orpington! Just noticed the same thing on her and had a little panic attack before you guys calmed me down
THANKS!!!
I have two silver laced orpingtons - Margaret and Mrs Warboys - and the poor girls have a HORRID infestation of lice around their vents and backside area. They're only about ten months old (and still haven't started laying!) but I've had these constant infestations since I got them home. My...
Thanks for your ten cents The only reason I gave the rumour any credibility was because it was from the only avian vet in the area. Considering she charged me £80 to put my hen to sleep, I reckon she was just touting for extra business by making out I couldn't take the old girl home to...
A recent expensive trip to the vet to have one of my Warrens put to sleep yielded the slightly odd-sounding bit of information from the vet that chickens - pets or otherwise - are to be classed as farm livestock under EU law, meaning you won't be able to bury them on your own land and will have...
Only had my point-of-lay White Star for a couple of months, but she's fast become a favourite!
Bags of personality. She's had her wings clipped but she still manages to get up on things my other hens have no hope of reaching. As soon as something unfamiliar enters the garden (like our...
Thanks for the advice. Sadly the poor old girl had to be put to sleep
Took her to the only avian vet within 20 miles. Just a couple of minutes in there and the vet said she could feel the "egg" was actually one of three large tumors. It would cost £400 for exploratory surgery, the other...
Thanks for the pics! I brought one of my other Warrens inside for comparison (pooped all over the living room, as is their way ) and the poorly hen is definitely more swollen. She seems a lot more active and bright today though. I gave her two Tums (she loved them!) and have kept an eye on her...
I'm having a similar issue! My silver-laced orpingtons are 27 weeks now and I've not seen a peep from them! They're bottom of the pecking order and the older chickens are very bossy. Not agressive as such, just making the orpingtons sleep i a different bit of the run, wait for food etc. Could...
My 2-year-old Warren is showing some of the symptoms of being egg bound.
Walking like a penguin for about two days
Just sitting in her nest box looking really miserable (she's top of the pecking order and usually out bossing the others about all day!)
I can feel a large mass inside her...
They free range over a pretty big area - I've seen them rip baby rats apart and eat all the soft stuff inside. I wouldn't put it past them to eat some random pile of gross bits of something they found on the floor! I think I'm going to give them a dose of wormer, check for mites and disinfect...
