We aren't in the "North", but it's sort of felt like it. We had one night that we were -2 and our girls did fine. We have no heat in the coop, but it is fairly well insulated. They just all cuddled up together and next morning came out of the coop lively and just fine.
I agree!! I bet Petunia is actually Paul. Sorry but I had BA's that did that, both were roosters and out of 14 GLW "pullets" I now have a beautiful GLW roo. I picked them ALL out at about this age.

Hi, You didn't say where you got your GLW aka EE. Having said that, I have three pullets in a group of GLW that I bought from a hatchery, that look like GLW's except they do have dark legs..So far two of the three has started laying and they are laying almost Olive Green eggs! Contacted the...
I have three GLW x EE cross pullets. All three have dark legs and their combs don't look like the others. Two of the three have started laying and we are getting almost Olive Green eggs from the two. They were a mistake..EE roo took up residence in the pen with the GLW hens <g>. Other than...
I use Flubenvet 1%. I buy mine from the UK and I love it! The girls ate it for 7 days (no extra treats) and it was great not having to withdraw eggs. It does say that you can't use the birds for slaughter for a certain amount of time but we don't eat our chooks so we're fine there.
I don't...
Guess this isn't an emergency, as it's been going on now for a few months, but...
We have a Barred Rock type hen that started sort of weaving around acting sort of drunk about three months ago. It has gotten somewhat more pronounced. She acts as if her feet are sore and lately has been...
Dumb question..Where is the umbicle cord on a baby chick and does it begin to look like a dried up little thread before it falls off?? I had one that had a little thread looking thing hanging and I wondered if that's what it could be. It appeared to be in his vent area. Gone now, but I did...
Hi, I think you will be fine, just hang a heat bulb for them if they get cold they'll go to it. Here's a pic of ours in their brooder (we put them out Tuesday for the same reason, 4 weeks old and to big for their inside brooder):
It got down to 29 last night and I was scared to death when I...
WOW!! I also ordered from Ideal and it took my post office two days to get them to us and we're just a state away from Ideal!! Glad your shipment worked out well. I've shipped several dolls to a lady in PR and they all got there in quick order and without incident. Your postal employees down...
Hi, I had my fuzzy butts in a 105 quart Rubber Maid tub. We got a box of two 250 watt bulbs for the brooder, but only used that size for a very short amount of time. I found red heat bulbs from Petco, fairly pricey but they do the trick. I got 100 watt ones but they have them from 75 watt on...
Hmmmmmmm, I ask the guy at TSC about those pine pellets and he said he wouldn't use them. He does seem fairly knowlegable, has his own back yard flock at home. He told me that the pine pellets were indeed compressed and can swell up if the chicks should eat one. They are made to swell to...

Hi and [
I am certainly not an expert, but I've seen many posts here that have helped me. As for separating her from the others, I would say no unless they are picking on her. Start her on the vitamins and yogurt, bet she is much better in 24 hours. IF they start to peck at her, you...

Mine too, I've used two or three bags for my chicks, they've been on it since they were about 3 days old. There is an aroma, but it's pine not cedar. The chips are a very light color not reddish.
We use them in our nest boxes too and I have noticed no problems at all. I don't...
Hi, Out of our 25 Australorps, one was really tiny and there was another that is also smaller, but not quite so small as Bitty. I think I can tell you now (they are 4 weeks old), I truly believe they are both roosters. Neither has much in the way of tail feathers, their combs are a lot redder...
They are Australorps. Got them from Ideal, the po took their time getting them to us, but still only lost two and there were two extras. We can't keep them all, so once I can pick the ones I want to keep, we will re-home the rest. As near as I can tell there are two little roos and the rest...
