I can move the brooder into the coop. It's a wired dog crate so they will have protection. I was considering doing that, but wasn't sure if I needed to. I think I'll be doing that today. Thanks for the confirmation :)
I have ten seven week old chicks and would like to move them outside. I live in ohio. The coop currently has seven older girls living there (wyandotts, buff brahma, golden buff). Is it okay to put them together or do I need a buffer of sorts so they don't get picked on? My babies are cochins...
I would like to collect some eggs for incubation/hatching. How long is the max time I can collect before setting them? I know I need to store them in a carton large end up.... is that right? And no refridgeration, right?
I say help it hatch, s-l-o-w-l-y. take a bit of the shell off and see if it can break through the membrane. If not, just make a small slit (it doesn't take much really) and see it that helps. I helped two of mine 2 wks ago, my first time hatching, and they are thriving. They would have died...
I'm not an expert by far, but I would say the mister is a very good idea. You can also give them some frozen fruits or veggies to pick at, and they will love watermelon, any melon really, or cucumber skins, etc... will help to cool them. I would think they will know to go inside in case of...

Its the medication staying in their systems I worry about. I dont want to eat medicated meat.
If you do feed it, you don't have to feed medicated the entire time. You can switch to a non-medicated after week 3 I think. A friend feeds her broilers non-medicated and hasn't had any...
I have some due on May 31st. It's my first time having chicks hatched from a broody or ever ( minus the two that hatched a couple of days ago) Anyway, I'm right here with ya
I have a broody sitting on about a dz. eggs. I have two chicks that are 1 and 2 days old. If I give the chicks to my broody salmon faverolle will she still sit on her clutch? She still has about 2 wks to go til hatching. I don't have an incubator so I can't put the eggs anywhere else. I can...
I'm not sure about putting it back. The current broody (my salmon faverolle) is very sweet, but the original broody is not at all. I don't know if she'll take the chick and still sit on her clutch. That's part of my problem. And thank you for the humidity explanation. I've seen humidity...
personally I think Robin and Misty look like Silver Laced Wyandotts. My Wyandotts looked like that when they were chicks. I could be wrong, but that's what I'm seeing.
Yes, I brought it inside. No, I don't have an incubator, but it was under a heat lamp. It hatched out just fine and is fluffy, eating, and drinking... oh and peeping. As I said I'm new to this and it was the most logical step in my mind.
I have a newly hatched chick and one that is starting to hatch. They were under a broody until she jumped off the nest before time was up. I then put the eggs under my other broody that just started sitting 2 days prior. She's been broody before though. Anyway, one started hatching yesterday so...
I was so excited when I walked into the coop today and discovered a new egg! I know it's new because it is a dark brown and none of my eggs have ever been this dark. I have one easter egger, three golden buffs, four columbian wyandotts, and one silver laced wyandott... all who are just reaching...

Are your hens confined with the two roosters or do they have the ability to get away from them for a while? If you like at least the one rooster, it may be a good idea to wait and see if the girls are just going through a molt. I know that some of my hens loose all their feathers and...
Thanks for your replies. The rooster has come into his own, so to speak, within the last month or so and has been quite active with my hens. I don't think they are liking him very much and have been contemplating sending them ( I have two) to the butcher. They are really pretty roos and the...
