So husband and I are both mildly concerned that our cookies and cream chick may be a cockerel instead of a pullet. At 2 weeks there aren't any distinctly male physical traits, but her behavior is noticeably different. None of the behaviors are distinctly male either though and I'm wondering if...
Starting a thread for pictures and stories of my own little flock. In December the city was finally convinced to amend the animal ordinance to allow chickens. In January we placed an order with Meyer and began our wait. Our hatch day was April 29, and on May1 we finally got our chicks! After a...
We got the email from our hatchery that our chicks have shipped :wee
I'm crossing my fingers they'll be here tomorrow, it's 410 miles from us to the hatchery (the drive takes 6 hours, obviously they'll be in transit longer than that but still hoping to get a call tomorrow late morning or early...
I did a search on the gardening forum but nothing really came up. I know some of you have irises, so let's see some pictures!
Constant Companion reblooming iris.
Maui Moonlight Madness reblooming iris.
I have several other varieties, but these are the only two blooming right now. I love Iris...
Has anyone had Sandhills buckeyes? Are they typical hatchery quality or closer to show quality? We're considering getting back into buckeyes maybe next year or so and I figured it couldn't hurt to look and see what's out there for sourcing stock. We raised them mostly because the extra roos were...
I know the thiamine/b vitamins renders the amprolium in medicated feed ineffective, but does medicated feed affect the efficacy of thiamine? If you were treating a chick for thiamine deficiency would you need to switch to non-medicated feed?
Is there any reason a mix can't inherit a crest (like legbars have) and beard/muff? Would crossing a legbar with ameraucana or easter eggers achieve this?
I'm fairly confident on the basics of color genetics, but I don't know anything about crest/beard/muff genetics
Last year for Easter I got the kids Peeps pancake kits. This year I made my pancake recipe and cooked it in the pans.
I prefer my pancakes with nutella and jam (usually lingonberry but I had to use strawberry because the lingonberry smelled bad)
They're so fluffy! Turns out my pancake recipe is...
We're starting to finalize our run plans. We will be using hardware cloth for thr run fencing. Initially I thought I had read that 1/4" was best but a little more digging and I see that 1/2" is actually preferred for predator proofing.
Anyway, we're trying to work out the apron. Husband is...
I have seen amazing results with honey on some frankly horrendous wounds where there wasn't enough skin to cover a wound. But thinking about it all my experiences have been with mammals; dogs, cats, and even rabbits. I can't recall ever using it on birds or reptiles.
We all know that mint is super aggressive. We also know chickens can absolutely destroy every scrap of vegetation in a confined area. Do we think we could use chickens to eradicate mint by penning them in an area that's been overrun by mint?
When we placed our order the cookies and cream chicks were not available for our hatch date. Browsing the website this morning, they are now available for the hatch date we chose!
I'm really excited to be able to get one after all! They were the 14yo's first pick plus I'm always a fan of...
[Not so] Patiently waiting for the chicks we ordered from Meyer Hatchery (we ordered for a hatch date of April 29, so we have a ways to go yet). I have a pretty solid idea for what most of the chicks will look like, but we ordered one olive egger and from website photos it's a wildcard as to...
I searched but the only thread I found was from 11 years ago. Anyway, a few years ago husband bought me a nail stamping starter kit and I've been hooked ever since
These are the nails I did today (shh, I know the stamping on my right thumbnail are badly off center)
In the past we've used standard gravity waterers but I see that nipple waterers have become much more popular in the last few years.
Obviously the nipple waterers will stay cleaner since there isn't a trough/well of water for chickens to scratch bedding into. What I'm wondering is if the water...
It's been a hot minute since we raised day old chicks, so I've forgotten. But how old are your chicks when you start to offer foods other than chick starter? I know we can't offer them until we have grit available, but how young is too young?
We have a 2.5 car garage and are planning to section part of it off for our chicken coop (cut a hole in the wall for a door, maybe add a window as currently the only window is on the back wall). Are there any special considerations we need to take into account due to the concrete floor?
In the...
We are trying to narrow down which breeds to include in our small flock (limited to 6 by city ordinance). I love the frizzle look but I'm trying to decide if it's worth the $10 (or more) difference for a chance to get a smooth feathered bird anyway (most likely we would only be able to get one).
We're looking at ordering chicks from Meyer this spring but we are only allowed 6 hens, so we're struggling to narrow down which breeds we want.
Right now these are my top picks for brown egg layers. Roosters aren't allowed, so an autosexing breed is very appealing. Pretty much no chance of an...
