Approx 1 year old hen losing fluffy feathers beneath her vent

I adopted two hens and introduced them to my two hens a week ago. The two new ones were in a flock with several roosters and looked pretty banged up when I got them. (Broken feathers, missing feathers). The hens don't let me near, they act normal and look good except one is losing all the...

    Irrational fear!

Ughhh!!!! I am finally getting three eggs a day which is awesome! But right before they started laying someone sent me an article on salmonella and back yard chickens....now I'm scared to actually eat the eggs! Help! The article said you can't tell if a chicken has salmonella or not. It...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

We got our first egg!!!!!!! Yeah! To celebrate the kids and I made it a science investigation. Hypothesis - an organic free range chicken egg will look different from the different store bought eggs (cheap, organic, cage free). It was a bright orange double yolk! The kids were so proud!!!!

Roosting on top of nest boxes?

Not easily. We didn't build it - and first time chicken owner I didn't realize how bad the design was! it's an a frame. The only openings are the POp door and nesting box door. I try to pitch straw back there when I'm cleaning it - but the chickens push it back. I'm afraid of just...

Roosting on top of nest boxes?

Ok. My chickens seem to like sitting on top of their nesting boxes. Ok, that's putting it mild - judging from the amount of poop they spend all their coop time up there. Is this a problem? Besides being difficult to clean? They do have two roosts to choose from - and it's just the two of them...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Week 19/20 red sex links and nothing....... I let them free range in our suburban yard (not to many places to hide eggs) bright red combs. They don't squat for me - but they are generally too interested to see if I have treats. So, should I lock them into the coop/tiny run until they start...

    Integrating chickens With existing chickens

Ok. So, I have a one acre fenced yard. The existing chicks can get through the fence if they really try - but I haven't seen them do it since their companion was nabbed and eaten on the other side. I could conceivably let both sets roam the yard or I can fence off two runs. Which is better...

    Integrating chickens With existing chickens

I'm just envisioning a west side story show down. Two against two battling it out! I just didn't think this early in the game I'd have to add to my flock so I am woefully unprepared!

    Integrating chickens With existing chickens

New to chickens this summer. I have 2 red sex link 18 week non layers. I have been offered 2 golden comets 1 year and laying. I'm trying to figure out logistics. The coop size is ok but not able to be sectioned off. So it's all or nothing in regards to coop. I can section off a run for...

    Chickens wandering the neighborhood

So two pullers returned to the coop yesterday afternoon. I went searching for the third - no body but piles of feathers and definitely drag marks where she was trying to re enter our perimeter fence. Guess my chickens learned the hard way that the fence is there for a reason. So. My question...

    Chickens wandering the neighborhood

Yep. They have a nice size coop for three (8x8) and a decent run. I just thought they would like to eat the bugs in the garden. Hopefully they survive until sundown and they come back! It's a neighborhood of cats and dogs!

    Chickens wandering the neighborhood

My chickens are not friendly - no matter what I do. But, I thought we had come to a happy arrangement. I let them roam in the one acre fenced backyard (including spacious organic garden) and they always stayed within the fence. Today, however, they chose to break that agreement. I tried to...

    No one understands this story....

3 - 18 week old red sex link pullets, bright red combs = impatient me! Dutifully, I placed a golf ball in each of the nesting boxes fervently hoping we might see some activity. This afternoon my daughter was outside playing and I heard a squeal as she frantically ran to the house clutching...

    Poor traumatized pullets

So, I had 6 chickens, I knew two were roosters and had an inkling about the third. Day one, I went out and got the two definite roosters (no roosters in my city) to rehome. The girls were a bit shaken, but not crazy. Very next day the possible rooster, turned full strutting, crowing rooster...

Is any one of theses a hen?

All three were supposed to be austrolorpe hens. I know one is a rooster because he crows - but not sure about the other two. I also think only one is an austrolorpe (white feet) and two jersey Giants (yellow feet)
