I’m probably up for a horror scene when I go down tonight aren’t I 😞
Any guess on which type it is? And does that matter for treatment/clearing of infestation?
Warning for pictures of a dead chicken
One of the roosters I have died. He had been active my sickly and I had quarantined him inside the coop.
Today I went down and he was dead and he’s absolutely covered in mites. Are these opportunistic? Or do I have a serious infestation on my hands?
I...
Thanks everyone for the advice as far as broody hens and such! I thought I’d post a little update.
Tuesday night (I was way to tired Monday lol) I set up a pen inside the run connected to a crate. Put the hen in with some eggs-the one I thought was broody wasn’t so went with broody hen number...
Number 2 and 3 a few weeks. Number 4 about 4-5 days maybe.
And I suppose number 1 could technically have been broody since Saturday, as I work nights and saw her… actually she may have been broody…she jumped out of the box not long after I came down. I think I may have even had a thought...
Thankfully in this instance I’m a night-shifter (and have the next couple days off), so I can monitor for a while if I’m still unsure.
When I got her to tuck an egg under her I was so happy, the one I was going to try to give them to broke her brood, and Momma showed no sign before.
I just...
So I pick up chicks tomorrow. The only hen (a little over one) that has reared a chick *just* went broody. She wasn’t yesterday, but now she’s hissing at me and tucked an egg I have under her. She did a great job rearing the chick (she was 8 months at the time)
There are a few other broody...
I want to try to give the chicks I have ordered from Meyer’s hatchery to one of my broody hens. Do I need to quarantine those chicks before giving them to her? If so how long?
He was a big boy, so I was thinking coyote too, just didn’t realize we may have some here. I’m at a weird place of suburban meets country. Tons of homes but also farms.
The only other thing I can think of is that he fell off the ledge in the woods chasing something and fell in the creek. It’s...
Would a fox or coyote be able to take one out without a mess? Assuming it was in a place I was able to see a mess.
I know we have foxes around here, but I really am just surprised I haven’t seen feathers anywhere.
I just lost my Big Brahma male. 8-10 lbs. No trace- no feathers or blood, at least where I can see. My dad found a very skittish female by herself hiding close to roosting time.
My only guess is he chased something off into the woods, where he got got, because I can’t imaging him going out...
But I’m pretty sure they are a cockerel. Opinions?
Age is about 11 weeks. It’s most likely a cross between a Salmon Faverolle hen and a buff Brahma too.
Sorry for bad pics
So I have windows that open out, but it only has a bug screen in it. Any ideas on how to add the galvanized wire for protection to the window without removing functionality?
Some pictures of the set up and the current (bad) solution
So I just had an egg hatch last night by broody mother. She has regected the chick. I have one who has already cracked the outer shell and will be out in the next 24 hours, and some more that are not far behind. Should I buy an incubator for these last few days, or keep an eye on her and get...
