I just had to share...another successful hatch!
1.5 years ago I ordered 14 more pullets. One ended up being a rooster!
So we kept him and now I have had 3 rounds of hatchlings. One went broody on my sons birthday and I let her sit on them.
This was the most successful hatch yet. 5 so far, one...
thanks for the info.
i don't hatch out a lot of chicks.
a few roos is fine, but i don't want to keep that many.
i am happy to give them away.
i just did not know what the best way to go about it is.
thanks!
i have a broody hen, hatching chix as i type. this is my 3 round of babies i have let hatch.
each hatch has produced at least one rooster. i currently have two grown rooster and 2 roos.
i am sure i will have another roo in this mix.
i do not need/want that many. 2-3 is plenty. they are 'muts'...
I moved a broody hen to a differnt coop by herself as the baby chix will hatch in 11 days.
However, she is not wanting to sit back on her eggs. I had to move her during the day ( 11am).
Will she eventually go back to sitting?
Thanks for the help.

I had my husband do it.
Gave him baking soda a bag and vinigar. He said it went well....but he wouldn't tell me otherwise. It was so hard. But now mama is off the nest and happy with her 3 little chicks!
Has anyone ever done this cross breeding?
I did and got two and also crossed the sussex roo with my welsummer.
3 adorable chicks. Waiting to see if hey are pullets or Roos. They are two weeks old.
my husband had to do it.
wow...never thought i would be this upset.
had to help it hatch a few days ago...could not stand, had hip problem too.
crying!!!
i was ok when others died during hatch...but not ok when i am the one deciding to put down.
thanks erica.
i know i have been researching how to put a chick out without much suffering.
i have researched splayed leg a bit, and it has never been able to really move. just lays there. one of the hips are sticking out and up.
def not normal at all.
hate if it is suffering.
3 chicks hatched successfully.
one chick was stuck; as the membranes were dried out.
helped it out, but now after 2 days...it can't stand.
hip area even looks deformed.
i have tried to hold and let legs go straight...can't even do that.
chick just lays there.
advise???!!!
new at this...let mama hen go broody.
they are hatching now.
2 successful
2 were hatched, but flattened
1 has shell gone, but membrane around it.
i am letting mother nature take it course; however, i feel like it need to help the chick out.
thoughts???
first time letting a hen go broody.
one chick hatched great.
found 2 that have been flattened.
not sure if hen is smothering them and then sitting or what.
anyone else have this issue?
good idea for the 'shelter feeder for chicks'.
thanks again for all your help.
just went out to work on seperating it more.
saw a dead chick. it was flattened.
that is two now that have not made it.
and one that has.
i have 3 year old hens, 1 year old hens, and now a day old chick.
when they...
thanks so much for the help.
i was not ready for a broody hen. i have raised chicks from day old, but never had a roo until last year.
so when one hen wanted to go broody, i tried to get her off and she was not getting off her nest no matter what.
so i places eggs under her. no clue if they were...
thanks for the advice.
one chick had started hatching and i think she crushed it.
it was dead in half the shell.
so sad...i was really wanting that breed to hatch.
with your experience...do you seperate your chicks from the rest of the flock?
i was hoping to mix mine and mama will protect her...
a chick just hatched from my broody hen.
however, the other few have not yet.
when i went to check on the others, she started pecking the little chick.
it went back under her. there is food and water nearby.
do i need to help the chick see the food/water?
will mama peck the chick to death...
yeah...one has hatched. went to check on others, still not hatched. however, when i moved her butt up to check on hatchings...she started pecking the little one.
what do i do while i let her sit on the other few. they should hatch (if they are going to) today or tomorrow.
