That is a great pic, the box is big enough for 2, but it seems 3 want to try to lay at the same time now, we are getting 4 a day regularly, with an occasional smallish whiter egg every so often, kind of like a dwarf egg. But we are so pleased with the girls. I never knew what escape artists...
I have finally started getting eggs, 4-5 a day so far, the other day I was doing some deep litter addition when in the box next to me, one of my hens started making some clucks and cackles like she was very pleased about something, she is one of my New Hampshire reds, our oldest 4 birds, and...
I have had the chicks for about 8 days now, 4 new hampshire reds, and 4 golden comets, all about 5 weeks old, they seem really happy in the coop and run. They are rather skittish around me, but when I show up with raisins, they now are not so afraid. The reds are so much bigger than the comets...
The bird man here says that if other birds are picking on them, you give them a roosting pole up in the air, they will go up to get away, but in any event, with the pen and coop, I have enough space for the birds, my problem is I will have some, then get more, so new birds will be added, and I...
there is a creek just behind the coop, and I thought to my self, maybe I ought to give the chickens a way to cross, so out came the chainsaw, and some old recycled lumber, and presto, a log bridge, nothin fancy, but maybe the birds will like it, if not, surely my wife will, and no, her name is...
zabhoo,
I was told by my chicken guy, you can use cubic footage, because they will fly to move away from each other, and that gives me plenty, I'll add some more roosting poles in the pen this week. But likely it will only be 12 birds.
Pacetruckguy,
I was born in Sonora, but find myself in the finger lakes region of NY now, funny how life works! One thing about this area, it's really quiet, only heard 1 siren in the last 6 months!!
well it's very close to finished, I wont wrap the sides and tops till fall, but the roof is mounted, sheathed and the pen is in, the corner shot shows the window on the side of the coop, and I have another pic here of the door handle, latch and hook I forged, the shavings are in the nestboxes...
as easter approaches, I thought this might be a nice one to show, the grape vine crawls up the cross, and the leaves turn towards the cross, and the stone from certain angles looks like a skull, can you say golgatha? Happy resurrection day to all.
oh yeah I forgot, I put a slide out shelf below the roost, for ease of cleaning, and will add a second roost pole, I intend to have 12 birds, 4 road islands, 4 black sexlinks, and 4 golden comets, hope they get along!!
I have been able to spend some time on the new coop, it is a tractor type, and I have modularized it into 3 sections, you can see the roof, SECTION 1, just set not yet attached, and the pen, SECTION 2, also not attached, and the actual coop SECTION 3, in the rear, I should sheath the roof soon...
here is a bell hung on a bracket, I made the bell from an old oxy cylinder, and the bracket from some old rail parts, I try to use 2nd use (read recycled) material for most of my work.
Thanks for the kind comments, I was able to attend the Campbell folk school, the Touchstone school of craft and the Appalachian school for the arts, along with being mentored by some fine smiths. And I'm just now beginning to figure out which end of the hammer to swing!!
would someone please answer the wood ash questions posted earlier? I burn all winter and have a nice ash buildup, if it can be used, I would like to. To reiterate the questions: is there a problem using them? and if not, how much would you use, and how often? Thanks for all the other info!
While mine is not done yet, I have been perusing these pages trying to come up with a name, and it just this second struck me, I will name it "Fowly Forge" ! It will sit very close to my forge building, and they will get to see me in the forge working on the weekends, I imagine the braver birds...
