These two are about 7.5 weeks old, I bought them straight run. Still not sure about their genders yet, could go either way. You can see their size in comparison to the wheaten maran pullet, they're both smaller than her, especially the SLP. I know it might still be too early but any guesses??
I have a French wheaten maran "pullet", a silver laced polish, and a Crevecoeur (both straight run). All three are 5 weeks old. The French wheaten maran pullet seems to be the right color for a girl, with only very little black, but it looks like she's already getting color in her wattles. I...
I got her (I'm hoping "her") from the assorted polish/crested bin at Wilco. She's mostly black with a white belly and some spotty gray/bluish. She's not a mottled houdan cuz there's not enough white and only 4 toes. Her wing feathers are some white some black, her feet a mix of white and black...
So I bought a 5 week old whiting true blue today from a lady who gets them from Murray McMurray and she basically looks like a brown leghorn with a pea comb and more of a salmon chest almost. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. I didn't have much options as far as color goes, but I know they come...
Yes, I live right by the protected wetlands in the Willamette valley (Oregon). The biggest predator I know of in the area is raccoons, and I know chicken wire is not the best protection, but it was the best I could do. I'll try and post more pictures soon
I have a rabbit hutch I turned into a chicken tractor that I call "the Tank". I made it to keep predators out and so I could easily move it to new patches of grass in the yard. The coop part is raised about three feet and is 3'x6' (18ftsq) with the underneath of it fenced off as part of the run...
Well I caved in and bought three 4 week old pullets today after not having any chickens for almost... a year? Almost 2 years? I can't even remember... but I got a red sex-link, a barred rock, and I believe a partridge rock. I don't have any pictures yet, but I'm wondering if y'all have any ideas...
Which is better: finding generic breeds for cheaper at feed stores
Or ordering heritage or ornamental breeds from a hatchery for more? How high are the risks in doing that?
I got a SLW from the feed store near us and it ended up being the uglies chicks I had :lau
But it had some weird feather condition and never had good lacing. But i have seen some gorgeous Wyandottes, I especially love the blue laced red ones
I've raised some mottled javas before, they're Fun!
Do you think I should try and find chicks from feed stores or farms around me or take a risk and order them?
Nice, thanks for the insight. Yeah, I've thought about leaning towards heritage breeds for that very reason but wasn't really sure what is actually considered heritage. Feed store nearby has Dominiques right now, which would be cool. I'd love to gave a legbar but they're so hard to find
