My hatch is underway. 40 eggs in the bator and 9 hatched so far. Many more pipped. I'll be asking for help identifying colors. It promises to be a great hatch if only I could relax! The oldest hatchling hatched 24 hrs ago and they are all still in the bator. I believe I can leave them in...
My crew has new photos at: www.flickr.com/crawforddogs
No close up of their new feathers though. The darker ducklings are coming in white and a dark chocolate color that seems to be mixed with some occasional white? Almost like they may end up mallard and white with runner pattern which is...
So. . . ducklings are changing colors! The darker ones pictured are coming in with a dark chocolate color. The two paler ones are coming in completely white except for a bit of color (dark chocolate?) on heads. I will post photos but am amazed. What in the world did I produce?
I must not have apricot then as she doesn't have eye stripes. She's runner pattern but with a funky color that isn't fawn. I may track her down and take a photo of her. . or not. I think she might be the drakes favorite as she seems very harassed and annoyed lately. Perhaps she'll be getting...
Not sure which photo you are talking about but yes I do have 1 blue hen, 1 mallard hen, and 1 apricot hen along with various other colors. I rarely photograph the adult ducks as none of them are used to people so it's a bit of a downer to get nice photos.
All the ducklings I have do have...
My first batch of runners hatched and I'm debating on color. Two of them are obviously fawn/white. The other 3 are definintely not. One of them has a pink beak. Not slightly pink either, it's really pink with no orange/yellow at all!
The drakes are fawn/white, hens are: fawn/white...
Wow, these look quite a bit like my newest hatches (I'll post photos tomorrow). I've got some runner ducklings out of I think a mallard hen X fawn/white drake. I've been trying to figure out what color they are. They look like the ones on the bottom left of the lower photo and one looks like...
I'm not that brave. . in fact I'm quite anxious about my 'lings. It's day 30 of hatch and they are still working their way out of their shells. 1 died part-way out of the egg. . and others are still pecking away.
So lovely!
My runners are trying to hatch right now. . lots of hatching drama. Hopefully all turns out well and I'll have new runner picts to post in a day or so. .
Everyone I know uses both drakes and hens for stockdog training. However hens are used lightly during laying season and only light ducks such as Indian runners and khaki campbells hens are used- heavier breeds aren't (they tend to have all kinds of issues). I wouldn't allow a dog that was...
Today I harassed a quacker. . . she didn't seem to notice. I let the ducks out and went to collect eggs from the nest boxes. Turned out their was a fawn/white runner busily laying an egg. I went outside the pen and stood under the eaves in the pouring rain for about 5-6 min. while she...
Mrs. Pekin used to attack people. . . she's improved drastically since she joined my flock. Now she tries to evade capture (she uses her wings to help her walk faster-- like crutches?) and just gives me an annoyed look when I've picked her up. And an annoyed quack when I examine her for...
