By the way, has anyone tried feeding citrus to their chickens? I read that in Japan they feed chickens with Yuzu, a japanese citrus fruit, so that the eggs smell and taste like Yuzu.
So I'm wondering what if I feed my chickens lemon, grapefruit or orange? Would the eggs also taste citrusy...
I have chickens go in the coop during the day when it's raining but they sleep on the tree at night no matter if it's raining, even in a storm. They're weird but still fine.
I'm planning to build 40ft x 80ft chicken coop for about 500-1000 egg layers. The chickens will free range daily outside in the forest.
How many automatic coop doors should I get? Or is there any other automatic system, so i don't have to get too many doors if i need them?
Cheers!
I am planning to adopt some spent hens from a nearby farm. They're isa brown around 2 years old.
Does anybody have experience in raising isa brown or other layer breed more than 2 years old?
I am planning to get about 10 chickens. How many eggs would I get per week from them?
Thanks! I use food grade charcoal powder. But you can also use normal charcoal and grind it to powder, or use wood ash, just make sure it doesn’t have chemical/toxic residue.
I use 2% charcoal powder in the feed
You can check out articles about using charcoal here...
My rooster also has similar symptoms. He was fine yesterday. But today he just suddenly look ill. Ive attached before and after pics.
Not sure what happened to him, but Im guessing he ingested something toxic.
For now, i just try to handfeed him and give him some activated charcoal. Hopefully...
In my case, I tried nipple waterer and the standard waterer but I didn't work out for me.
So I have a small pond for the waterer.
Then I added fish, shrimps and snails which are specific for cleaning up fish tank.
The cleanup crew (fish, shrimps and snails) will eat algae, chicken poop and...
Here's what I did with my run (there is no coop):
- Large run area (More room for poop to spread and dried out, less smell)
- Direct Contact with soil (The soil microbes help breakdown the poop)
- Deep Litter Method (Give time for poop to decompose and mixed in the soil)
- Designed it like a...
For me, I experimented and built an aviary-like run as a coop. I have 30 chickens in about 5,000 sqft coop area. During the day, the chickens spend time outdoor foraging (less poop inside).
That way, there's only few poop, mostly under where they sleep.
I also use deep litter method and add...
I'm still free ranging my chickens. I raised them inside an enclosed run but they still have access to the outdoor.
For me, free ranging saves time, cost, and energy. I've cut my feed cost about 50% with that. So i'm all for free range system.
As for predator issue, I built several covers so...
I have a large enclosed run (about 5,000 sqft), as a coop. My chickens are also free to roam around in nature during the day, and they come back inside the run at night.
I have 2 guard dogs that sleep inside the run with the chickens at night.
I've cut my feed cost around 50% with free ranging...
Hi there friends. Just wondering, have you experimented with different types of lightings in your coops? And did the lightings have any effect on the laying behavior or chicken’s health?
Im planning to have some lights in my coop and keep it on at night so I can check on the flock. But i dont...
That’s good to hear! Mine survived! I isolated each chick, used iodine to clean the sac, and then bandaid to stick their yolk sac to their belly, so they wouldnt step on their sac. Then i waited for about 2 days until the sac completely dried up, then i cut the dried sac.
Wow they are gorgeous, thanks for the info. I think I'll try breeding isa browns too. By the way, what are the egg color from second and third generation isa browns? Do they still have the same color as the first generation or do they vary?
Hi there,
I am planning to sell some fertile eggs for consumption, any idea how to prevent the embryo from developing? Anyone has experience in this field?
I've experimented by putting fresh eggs in the fridge for a few days at around 59F or 15C and then set them at room temperature for about 3...
