Thanks all for your suggestions. We went with the rock wall and everything turned out fine. Actually kept the rain off the food in the lower part of the coop so no soggy yucky mess either. The girls stayed in the tractor on Monday but were back to their daily "outings" on Tuesday. Hope...
Need a little help settling a debate: better to move the chickens onto gravel/rock under the porch or tuck the tractor in next to a tall stone wall to the north of the tractor (where we understand prevailing winds will come from). The tractor is an a-frame - base is 4 x 8. One of us is...
Welcome to BYC! Enjoy the new flock! My 3 y.o. is my helper. He wants to go "check on the chickens" several times a day. Followed by wanting to "pet" the chickens and "hold" the chickens. It's lots of fun!
Welcome to BYC! Don't have a ton of experience with chickens but our Plymouth Barred Rock is very tolerant of the attentions of my 3 y.o. son who just loves her. The rest of the crew (australorp, gold laced wyandotte, and java) are not so interested in being the focus of his affection. Our...
Welcome to BYC! So sorry to hear about the loss of your flock. We lost all three of ours last year to raccoons and now have the Fort Knox of chicken tractors (complete with padlocked doors on the coop and run portions). Good luck with the design modifications and with the next batch of chickens!
Welcome to BYC! I'm sure with the right coop design (and there are plenty of cool ones on this site) you can pull off two hens with no trouble (or even three). Plus with a secure coop the GSP should be no problem (but I'd go for a really secure coop - no one wants a soggy chicken ). Good luck...
Welcome to BYC! I'm pretty new to chickens so can't ID all on sight - do you have RIR? or a different breed? And you'll never hear me say a chicken is stupid - just google clicker train chickens - they can do some really cool stuff.
Welcome to BYC! Sounds like you have a nice flock in the future. We've got our chickens in a chicken tractor due to large number of predators in our area so don't have any experience with cats and chickens - just know that I really dislike raccoons! Enjoy your chickens!
