I've read stories of raccoons reaching through large openings and grabbing chickens. They say to use hardware mesh the first few feet from ground. I did my whole run after I got a 6 foot black snake in my run.
I have not had a rooster, and I always thought the egg call was the girls fighting over the nest box. Thanks for the insight, I will be more observant from now on.
2 years and no issues. This coop now houses my silkies. Chicken math required I build a bigger coop for the standard sized chickens. (this was never meant to hold 13 girls)
Ha! This exactly what I was looking for. Thanks EggSighted for your insight. my girls hatched 2/6 and since the temps plummeted this week i was very concerned about putting my girls out. I plan on introducing them to the flock at the typical 8 week mark but I wanted to let them out during...
@monnarush Sounds good. I sent you a PM with my number. I'll take the hens, but I legally cannot take the rooster. If you need to keep a hen to sell the rooster and hen as a set I understand.
@WVduckchick the rural king here has some too. The employees didn't know what kind though. They have alot of nice stuff there but their knowledge of chickens is that of a toddler. I may go back and try again. But they usually have really basic breads.
@monnarush Both the welsummers and...
For your first question, I would urge you not to feed your chickens pasta very often. As much as you want to spoil them, it may end up hurting them in the long run. In the same way processed grains make humans fat, it will do the same to your chickens. As your chickens gain fat, it messes...
As with many, I bought my EE under the tag of an Araucana. It didn't take long for me to realize I bought an Easter Egger. She has by far the longest tail of all my chickens, you'd think she was a Phoenix.
Lets start positive. She has beautiful colors, she starts white at the head and...
Like many, I started with just a couple chickens. Each year I get a couple more and I don't think that will change any time soon. With that in mind, it was time to upgrade my little coop. My original Coop ~~> https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/the-habitat-hut-re-used-furniture-coop

you are correct in saying that most of your chickens are a one a day breed. My Red Star and Barred Rock both lay daily. Did you ever fix your issue. It sounded like you were on the right tract with dietary concerns.
I'm getting rid of mine because I have neighbors and my hens sound like a flock of geese at 630 every morning. My golden commets are much much quieter and started layer weeks before the BSL
Mine did the same thing, I thought my black sex links were going to be supper aggressive because of this. I tried to give them different things to peck at like paper towel rolls and hanging strings. Things to play with. They stopped the eye pecking pretty quick, not sure if it really had...
