You are better to have too many than not enough, however they will definitely all fight over the same box.

Put a fake egg in all 3 nests and I'll bet they all get used

I had 1 ceramic egg in each nest.
They all used a favorite nest.
I put 2 fakes in each of the 2 rarely used nests and kept 1 in the favorite.
The next day all eggs were laid in the favorite.
Yesterday, 2 days later all 3 nests had 2 eggs laid in them, YES. GC
