Awww, how nice to find the scovie fan club!
We currently have 1 drake, 7 ladies and 17 babies and another nest is due in a coupla weeks Gotta love em!
Used to have 3 Aylesburys and whilst they are beautiful to look at the noise they make drove me up the wall. And they were sooooo dim. The...
Yeah, it is a bummer - she was a good lil layer.
I s'pose the tumour caused a blockage in the crop so the symptoms would be the similar. Nothing was getting through, and she was literally starving.
I cleared her twice yesterday morning and the 'vomit' was just mushed up food whereas the sour...
I took her to a vet (who I discovered specialises in chickens )
As she had lost a huge amount of weight he believed she had a tumour on/in her crop which was basically starving her to death.
Thanks for your help guys, seems we have Mareks disease.
The hen was culled today Bloody shame she was a great layer and was gonna be top 'dog' for breeding this spring.
As my dad (a farmer) always say 'If you've got livestock, you've got deadstock'.
Hi all
One of my Marans hens (laying but not for at least 2 days) is acting oddly. She hatched in spring 08.
She is making a strange noise - almost a quack/bark. This has been going on for about 5 days.
She is slowly opening and closing her mouth a lot - looking like she's taking a very deep...
Second duckling went to vets, was given oral anti biotics and the vet said 'oh, they are prone to this sort of thing'. Unfortunately I have no idea what sort of thing (My mum took it as I was at work). Little thing was found dead in house this morning.
I have extra anti B's should any of the...
Thanks terrie, as I have edited above the wings of the elder sibling have now been clipped and they can no longer get in the run. The older birds are totally free range with access to a lake and several acres of lush grass, I have no idea why they suddenly started fighting with their mother (the...
Thanks ozark, little one is eve worse now, cant lift its head when stroked - just squeaks gently. Have left my dad to cull it. Sad that I'll never know what caused it tho.
Female Muscovey duckling aged 5 weeks. Listless, blue bill, not washing itself. Been a lot of fighting recently between mum & older siblings, it is possible that this little one may have got caught in the middle - possibility of internal injury??
Just wondering if there is any other...
Hi all, can anyone give me an idea of whether ducks, chickens & turkeys can all be fed the same ration?
I currently feed my chooks n ducks a duck grower pellet and am wondering if our 3 new turkeys (destined for the xmas table) would be ok on this ration too.
I understand they need more...
Sorry to hear of your loss xx
Did she have a boyfriend? Duck love can be incredibly rough - my friends drake broke the neck of his favouite lady whilst in their paddling pool. Her head was over the edge of the pool and that was that.
In the wild I have heard of drakes drowning their ladies.
Oh wow, I never knew that!
I assumed they were bubbling over with calcium and I had relied on the fact as we have sooooo many snails here due to our outrageously wet summer that all the birds were getting their fill.
Thats the problem then, thank you so much for the info Pat. The oyster shell...
Thanks kesta - have you recently got your birds or changed their food at all? Do you think yours is due to a lack of calcium?
d.k - ACV = Apple Cider Vinegar? If so I'll try that.
cmom - I'm intrigued!!
Thanks chickens, as I thought.
I bought some oyster shell yesterday so am hoping that will fix the problem??
It does seem interesting that the weakness is on the same part of each egg, need to read up on how an egg is formed to work that one out I guess...
Has anyone else seen anything like...
Hi, these photos show a decline in shell quality over a few days
This is the first one and it shows a ridged area
A few days later this one was laid by the same duck and it looks like a bit of stone is stuck to the outside of the shell
And the next day this one was laid.
The 3 together...
