Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions:)
A friend of ours just built an amazing plucker that we can borrow when processing day comes. My current dilemma involves a scalding pot. What are your scalding setups, if you butcher your own birds? Another friend has a couple turkey...
Thanks, GotCoop. And sorry for the double post! GC, you mention that your FR were huge at 12 weeks. What were their weights? I keep hearing complaints that FR don't get as big as CX (complaints of 3-5lb birds dressed out) which was ultimately the determining factor that caused me to choose...
Hi folks:)
I've been following this thread since the beginning in anticipation of raising my own meaties this spring. I just placed an order thru my local feed shop for 25 CX. I have no idea whether they are straight run, all hens or all roosters. Should I call them back and specify? And if...

Better late than never, but if you have a mill locally, give them a call before driving out. As the owner of a (now former) horse boarding facility, we used to own a dump truck just to go pick up sawdust Horses are sensitive to walnut and cherry, one only a problem w pregnant mares, and we...
Lol, true! I have the leisure of leaving mine outside - the diarrhea in the house thing hadn't even crossed my mind! :) Excited to see what everyone's results are!
If Clem is food motivated, you can always practice with food. By practice, I mean do it when you're not mad at him for escaping ;) Just a random "come" when he's already heading in your direction, rewarded with a treat, works wonders. It becomes an immediate response with some practice...
I have one with a stomach of steel (and she eats annnnnything from horse food to bird food... Only thing I haven't seen her eat is the horse's hay. She loves their oats though!) and the other has a more sensitive stomach. I was actually thinking the probios in ff would probably help him with...
My bigger concern would be the health of their teeth. I do not feed canned dog food for the sole purpose that crunchy food helps keep their teeth clean...
Thanks delisha x2, as I saw your link on the (new) OT thread as well.
Ashdoes: they drink water... Mine love added acv to their water... Besides the bacteria - good bacteria - that grows as it ferments, I don't see how "all that liquid" would cause any problems. With any diet change in dogs...
Fermenting dog food makes sense in that it would provide them with all those beneficial bacteria we love so much :) My dogs get lots of those probios from the FF they steal from my chickens, lol. But I'm also curious about these experiments. Please keep us posted!!
Just thought I would mention here that a certain favorite OT of ours - now MIA - started her own website awhile back :) if you have questions for her, I'm sure you could send them there! (Idea just struck me)
I think most of the people that switched to ff - including me - saw a drop in egg count initially. However, I agree that the shorter days are more likely the culprit right now, although it could be a combination of the two. Once that egg count picks back up, be on the lookout for larger...
Interesting test they did! Thanks for sharing this:) As a teacher, I am the proud owner if a DRAWER full of sharpies, lol! I think I have every shape, size and color they offer. I'll be putting them to good use this spring :D
That's what I was thinking, stony. Under a broody, they're being rolled around and are right up against her skin (mine seemed to lose some feathers underneath.... Don't know if that's normal or not, but those eggs stayed warm...)
I know there was a roosting question yesterday, and I have one...
