I didn't start out by kicking him. He was my sweetheart, and I treated him like a prince. I dunno, maybe that was the problem when he first attacked. I'd just been hand-feeding him, then I stood up, turned around, and he came at me. I was completely stunned, as I'd never seen an ounce of...
I use a cone and a sharp knife. Tug the head toward me, slice the knife away with some muscle, one stroke, and it's done. I'd much prefer to use a hatchet so I don't have to be hands-on, but my aim sucks. You don't want to know how I found that out.
Thanks for the feedback. I probably should've done it several months ago, but I was hoping if I tried all those "rooster domination" tricks, he might calm down. But I've carried him, squirt him with water, smacked the crap out of him, and nothing works. Today was the last straw; I just needed...
So...having some problems with Pinky Pie.
He's becoming more aggressive the older he gets. I don't know if that's because I have more roos on the property now or what, but it's ridiculous. He charges the sides of the pen anytime I walk by (enough that he's actually rubbing the feathers off...
The parents look really nice. Keep us updated with pictures!
I've got some Birchen eggs that I bought in the bator, and some of them are a plum color! I wonder how hard it would be to breed for the heavy bloom because I love it.
You must have a sixth sense! I don't want to jinx myself, but I *think* at least two of my boys are actually girls!
I'm used to my pullets who have small, darker combs until a good 2-3 months old, so I thought I had all cockerels when my GFF chicks looked like this at 4 weeks:
But...
Hi there! I'm so far behind on posts but have been ridiculously busy. Just got NPIP certified and have been working on a FB page.
Quick survey:
I'm looking for some high quality Birchens, preferably black but will take blue. Sexed pullets or laying hens are much preferred, though I have...
Ugh, that hits WAY too close to home! I got 4 chicks from GFF ($240), and I'm almost positive they're all boys. And I already have plenty of nice cockerels!! Sigh, they're the most expensive chicken dinner I ever bought.
My problem is that I really don't have any decent girls! Right now, I only have 3 left, and none of them are very good (brown eyes, crooked combs, etc.) I'll have to get some pictures tomorrow.
My inexperience with BCM eggs led me to lose a bunch during incubation/lockdown, but I do have a...
I definitely haven't made up my mind! The only thing I was feeling rather sure about was that ShyGuy wasn't one I wanted to keep. It didn't help that he has such a flighty personality.
I like Copper the most, but I wasn't sure if his smaller size, larger tail, and lack of feathered feet...
I really like my Legbars, too! I bought two laying hens from someone local. He said they're from the Rees line. I managed to hatch a boy and girl from their eggs before my own roo got to them, lol. My order from GFF arrived last week, and in addition to the pair I requested, they included an...
