2 bantam welsummer hens born Sept 26 2011
Still fairly regular layers, one has nice dark eggs, the other more pale. Descent size eggs for bantams.
They've lived indoors their whole life with short yard outings.
One hen fairly dominant, the other extremely submissive...
Although 1 chick is lonely, yes, they do consider you their flock. I raised one hen and she used to follow my dogs around all the time. She was definitely part of the family. She was the hit of parties, begged more than my dogs do. Once she passed, I got two bantam hens, thinking that 2 chickens...
If you touch it, bubbles will rise. That's how I can tell. I don't have much of a sense of smell, so bubbles is a good indicator of fermentation happening.
That's what I was thinking, since it is fermenting, and being replenished, that the organisms would sustain life. Once left sitting without fresh feed added, it would use up it's food supply and die off, THEN it would get nasty.
Thanks. I still can't believe how much the like it. And I KNOW...
I just started using fermented feed, and they L O V E it. I only have 2 chickens. My question is how long can I add feed to the same mix before I have to change the solution. I mean, I use a small container that sits on my counter. I scoop some out each day for them and replace it with a scoop...
yeah, I was all excited when I actually was able to track down an owner, how often does that actually happen. But I did get the feeling that it was not that important to him to loose this bird. He nevr actually said, he'd find someone close to help with transport, or maybe we could meet inthe...
...bit with the temp lowered. So I warmed it back up, he has a heating pad under the cage for radian heat and a 60w bulb on top bringing the temp to 90* He seems to like that temp. I added a "shelf" so he will now jump up there (he was sitting in his food dish, so I was thinking he may want to...
Just thought I'd update you. This morning he showed minimal desire to preen and, he showed a few pecks of interest in the food bowl, so I ran out and got pigeon food. ( I was reluctant to spend the money if he wasn't at all interested in eating) After a while he began eating on his own ...
Wow, never realized there was a pigeon part of BYC.
Well, Sunday I found a homing pigeon. he was very tired, cold and thin. looked up homing pigeons, and "what to do when you find an exhausted homer" and put him in a crate with heat, and food and let him rest, Well Monday night I finally got...
They are still separated, just so I don't have to worry, however, when I put them in the run outside, they get along fine now. Were even dustabting in the same pit. So, who knows.
Mudsow
Unsupervised in the kitchen, she was just supposed to be checking her "dirt" for any leftover worms from the trip to school showing the childeren how she diggs for bugs. I'm SO glad she didn't drop and do this there!

Well, I've divided my chicken house. Penny is not too happy, but Peaches is thinking this is pretty neat, no body can pick on her.
So I'll keep them separated. They can see each other, I'm making them eat next to each other with the feeders hanging on the divided part. So they HAVE to interact a...
I have two hens that were born last September (welsummer bantams) hatchery chicks.
They have been together the entire time. I know Penny is more dominant than Peaches, She's also a bit larger and always has been. About a month ago, I was watching 2 hens for a friend for a week. They were outside...
No, they were definitly tucked in for the night. when I turned on the light, it took only like 5 minutes and she went, BAM into the whelping box. Like UhOh, gott an egg coming out! I can't imagine she'd jump down from her roost and back up to the nest box (it's on a shelf in the cage to give...
I have 2 indoor chickens. Bantam Welsummers, one started laying a few weeks ago. Tonight I came home late, the room was dark it was about 9:00. I came in (they are here in my computer room) dimmed the light so I wouldn't bother them and one JUMPED off the roost, and ran into the nest box, sat...
Thanks for changing the images, I tried that the first time and they didn't come up, so I switched it so they can at least be viewable.
Cubes and cable ties are my BEST FRIENDS ;)
I did the cube think making an indoor coop for my two bantam hens. It's 2 levels with the nextbox on top. It's 2'wide by 8' long x 38" high. They love it!
