Our run is about 2500 square feet and we free range part of the day. Mom is all over the place and would not wait for her. Last night I heard momma hen screaming her head off so I ran outside and saw her out in the field chasing a hawk. She came back still screaming. Only found one of her six chicks. Hi all. Hope everyone is ok with the heat and the storms. My special needs chick who tried to be adopted by the broody had minimal success. She sleeps with the the hen and her chicks 72nd is allowed to eat with them but isn't really a part of the group. She is on the fringe. She seems unhappy...- cottonlouie

12 out of 13 eggs hatched...both hens are doing a great job. One chick is sluggish but otherwise ok. I love watching the hens take care of those chicks! The brain damaged pullet is only tolerated by the hen, so she isn't adopted. That pullet doesn't seem to understand foraging...she pecks random...- cottonlouie

Ever heard of this before? We adopted 2 4 week old chicks from a friend who could not take care of them because their mom was taken by a Fox or coyote. We put them in the pen with the 11 week olds and adults, but provided them with numerous places to hide in that the bigger chicks could not get...- cottonlouie

Mine too! how long have you been fermenting and have you ever had any problems with botulism or aflatoxins? I had problems with yeast, always yeast...until I moved the jars to a dark shed rather than my sunny kitchen. Now it's just plain old fermented. I always clean the jars and spoon well...- cottonlouie

July 6 is hatch day....I lifted up the broody hen just a touch and saw half a broken egg. I set her down immediately and now I'm here in my living room on pins and needles freaking out because I want to see what is going on under that hen! I can barely stand it! One of the pics is an EE....I think she is gorgeous. My dog is literally guarding the little silkie/cochins. They are a few weeks younger than the others and we had to bring them home as they lost their momma to a predator and the owner couldn't take care of them. It's not an ideal set up but...- cottonlouie

Been off the thread for a bit...that's code for "I had a spell of depression." I got 3 4 week old chicks 2 weeks ago from a friend who lost the momma hen to a predator. One little pullet was found unconsious and frozen outside without mom at a day or two old and my friend put her back under mom...- cottonlouie
