    Minnesota!

Our run is about 2500 square feet and we free range part of the day. Mom is all over the place and would not wait for her. We also have 20 teenagers that would torture the chick if she wasn't with mom. I think I will have the kennel in the run by their waterer during the day as chickens come and...

    Minnesota!

Last night I heard momma hen screaming her head off so I ran outside and saw her out in the field chasing a hawk. She came back still screaming. Only found one of her six chicks. A bit later I heard peeping and watched a second chick run to her momma from under a bush. About an hour later three...

    Surviving Minnesota!

They can get outside because the porch is open but the few we had last year never went beyond the porch unless the snow was melted. The coop and porch are about 10 feet high. We are trying to figure out a cheap way to extend the porch ...

    Surviving Minnesota!

All this talk of fairs and L and M has me wanting to go to the county and state fairs AND go shopping.... That said, I am thinking I might have 30 chickens this winter. My coop is 8x12 and there is a 3 sided attached porch open to full sun on the south side that is also 8x12. In winter the...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Hi all. Hope everyone is ok with the heat and the storms. My special needs chick who tried to be adopted by the broody had minimal success. She sleeps with the the hen and her chicks 72nd is allowed to eat with them but isn't really a part of the group. She is on the fringe. She seems unhappy...

    Minnesota!

My daughter was visiting with her family and dog and the dog killed one of our pullets. We were so sad and mad. No fun.

    Surviving Minnesota!

12 out of 13 eggs hatched...both hens are doing a great job. One chick is sluggish but otherwise ok. I love watching the hens take care of those chicks! The brain damaged pullet is only tolerated by the hen, so she isn't adopted. That pullet doesn't seem to understand foraging...she pecks random...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Ever heard of this before? We adopted 2 4 week old chicks from a friend who could not take care of them because their mom was taken by a Fox or coyote. We put them in the pen with the 11 week olds and adults, but provided them with numerous places to hide in that the bigger chicks could not get...

Mine too!  how long have you been fermenting and have you ever had any problems with botulism or aflatoxins?  I had problems with yeast, always yeast...until I moved the jars to a dark shed rather than my sunny kitchen. Now it's just plain old fermented. I always clean the jars and spoon well...

I ferment. I love it because the chickens go nuts for it.

Very briefly. She thought they were to be gathered and picked them up, realized that might be for hatching, and put them back.

A neighbor picked up and then returned all the eggs under the broody. They are due to hatch on the 13. Are they destroyed?

Someone picked up all the eggs under my broody. They put them back. They are due to hatch on the 13. Are they ruined?

    Surviving Minnesota!

July 6 is hatch day....I lifted up the broody hen just a touch and saw half a broken egg. I set her down immediately and now I'm here in my living room on pins and needles freaking out because I want to see what is going on under that hen! I can barely stand it! Can I peek a couple times today...

    Surviving Minnesota!

One of the pics is an EE....I think she is gorgeous. My dog is literally guarding the little silkie/cochins. They are a few weeks younger than the others and we had to bring them home as they lost their momma to a predator and the owner couldn't take care of them. It's not an ideal set up but...

    Minnesota!

Been off the thread for a bit...that's code for "I had a spell of depression." I got 3 4 week old chicks 2 weeks ago from a friend who lost the momma hen to a predator. One little pullet was found unconsious and frozen outside without mom at a day or two old and my friend put her back under mom...
