Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie I see you tried to educate on the EE thread . I know a guy that uses the ring method also . Seen him be wrong a lot over the last 30 years . Still tells everyone he is never wrong .

Hi all. Hope everyone is ok with the heat and the storms.

My special needs chick who tried to be adopted by the broody had minimal success. She sleeps with the the hen and her chicks 72nd is allowed to eat with them but isn't really a part of the group. She is on the fringe. She seems unhappy but is healthy. Not sure how long to let her go on.

We have a relatively large enclosure, about 2500 square feet with pine trees, poplar, cherry trees, plum trees, and a variety of grasses and weeds. I have 4 hens, 20 pullets age 13 or 14 weeks old, and 14 chicks under 4 weeks old. No one seems to forage much except the hens and the babies who follow their mommas. I do have feed out at all times. The pullets were raised in a brooder. They are all good to excellent foraging breeds. Are they lazy? Is it normal for pullets to not forage? Is the enclosure to small so they ate up all the bugs? There is a section of yard grass that I actually mow...they simply don't dig it up or eat it down. There are parts of the enclosure that are dug up and some areas are "mowed" by them eating down the grass. Wondering if I should not have continual feed available.

Okay here are some plum leaves . Chickasaw or sand plum on right ( Prunus Agustfolia . One on left is the odd one . There are also America and wild goose said to be sand x America and then Canada ( prunis nigra ) . The sand plum is red skin and yellow flesh . Ripens in earlyJuly here . Not familiar with the fruit or ripening of the others . Those are the ones you may encounter in MN .
Just planted my turnips , diakon radish and some regular radish . Shortening days prevent them bolting to seed . For turnips Grandma always said 25th of July wet or dry .

Yea, I tried.....It was like talking to the wall and it all went over like a lead Balloon... BTW I bet you get a kick out of the geniuses that tell us how the Arauacanna were developed. ( however you spell it ).
