Surviving Minnesota!

I am a little afraid Ethel lost 4 of her keets today in the deluge

We got 3 inches of rain between 11:45 and 4pm.. I just came from locking the shed. In this warmer weather I wait until it is 70 out as to not over heat the chicks. I forgotto check on Ethel after the storm. I checked on everything else and it looked ok. Ethel was not around.

I thought she would take care of her Keets, it might have been too big of a task for her. There is not much I could have done anyways. When I locked the shed she was in it with just 2 keets that look drenched. Rain is the enemy of keets. The storm came up so fast, I had all I could do to get the doors secured enough to stop the drafts in the brooder shed.

I am hoping they went into a turkey apartment or are being typical Juvenile delinquent keets and will show up tomorrow. I gave Ethel a hug, she seems sad, or I could be projecting on her. Hard to say.

Anyways fingers crossed I find them tomorrow...

PS this was the largest fastest rain I have gotten this year, or since I got the rain gauge....

Poor Ethel she needed the hug.

After losing Ethel's guineas last night I decided to try and count the Partridge Chanticler's keets this morning. If you have never counted Guinea babies, it is quite a feat. My plan was to count them as they went out the door of their cage.

Keets move around a lot and fast in a chaotic manner. When I got done counting them I found she had 17. She is only suppose to have 13. I am thinking 4 of Ethel's decided to have a sleep over with the hen's. Ethel was most likely upset her babies would rather spend the night at a strangers house than with her.

I feel bad now, I wasted a hug on her. I am not a hugger. I should have saved the hug until she really needed it.

I am relieved to have all the babies though.

I have some white Ameraucana pullets laying . Egg color a little greenish . Getting 8 gram blackberries off my triple crown thornless . It is marginal winter hardy here . Winter damage last year but not this year . I will be back at the lake Saturday . Just me and my 23 old grandson . Women changed plans so just us guys this time . He only has 1 week off . So we will drive Friday night .

Have a great drive Jerry..

BTW you were not referring to the witchcraft sexing of chicks in the EE thread were you? You were referring to my trying to explain the possible errors in the color calculator chart, weren't you?

While hunting mushrooms yesterday, my cousin asked about a plant he found. It was a bumble Berry that was just setting berries, it had one red one. We found it about 8 miles from here. they do not grow here as a rule, so he was wondering what it was and if the berries were edible. I was able to tell him I know a guy that says they are! So thanks for making me look like I have a nearly normal IQ!!!

Drive careful jerry! Should I run out to the place and see if you need to pack a chainsaw?

The birds have found the wild raspberry patch down at the grown up garden. Their poop is dark purple. Loading up on their vitamin C.

Ralphie thank goodness for Keet play dates and turkey hugs.

Yes I was referring to the sexing method . Believers say they are never wrong .Good job on the mushroom hunting . Thimble berries are a odd member of the raspberry family . Trying to decide if I should plant my thimble berries at the lake .

BC the chainsaw always goes anyway . Got to cut more logs for lumber .

I read a little over on the EE thread. "I wish I could bet you. " sounds like a young chickeneer. Sometimes we all need a little redirection. Especially when young, lacking experience and our polar magnetism seems to be wonky. ;p

Dark purple ? From wild red raspberry ?

Do you have "thimble berries" to plant? I have millions at the cabin if you want some. I can try to get up there or meet you in Grand Rapids so you could get them. The cabin is about an hour from GR....

I am assuming thimble berries is what I call bumble berries....
