It doesnt look like mold to me.. just the natural aging of wood. Is it humid where the wood is? Maybe its breaking down a bit. I sometine rub linseed oil on exposed wood to weather proof it.
I think it would be big enough. I started out with something similar. Chicken math has totally taken affect and I up graded the size of my coop and run because I have a lot more chickens. If you dont plan to add more ever year youll be fine :jumpy. My only concern is adding silkies with larger...
I recommend having them be as close in size as you can manage. A few years back I had a cage separating my newbees for a few weeks. I thought it was ok to move them in with the new flock. Tooootally was not time! I kept them apart a little longer while constructing a place for the little ones to...
any ideas help, thanks! The coop as two windows and large double doors on one side that are about 6 ft wide total. I cant believe I didn't think of the sun baking the coop! I have a fan in there too. I just bought another one that oscillates so hopefully that will help. When i get trees I plan...
I live in WI and recently moved. My old coop location was in the shade so the coop stayed nice and cool. We moved to a previous farm field that has very little trees or shade. We got a 10x16 ft shed for a coop and built a 24x36 ft run. I was so excited to get my feather friends in the coop! That...
I had a regular waterer with the water supply and tray but was getting sick of cleaning up the water spills. I just switched to cup waterers attached to a bucket. Initally the chickens were biting the cups because they were curious. However, I've not yet seen one drinking from the waterer. Do...
I need recommendations from everyone. I live in a very cold climate and wanted to provide some additional heat to the chickens when it gets very cold at night, subzero temps. I don't want to add anything that will start a fire, like bulbs or heaters with fans. I was looking around and found a...
I found one of my newly laying production red in the run sitting her her tail tucked down. I opened the run and now she is walking around the yard. She seems to be walking ok but her tail still looks puffed out and pointing down. When I try to catch her, her tail goes back up to normal and she...
I'm glad to hear that is normal! I wanted them to learn to lay in the nest boxes and wondered if locking them up made them stop laying. They have a nice coop and large run. We have been giving them fresh greens. I feel like they are a tad spoiled so I'm hoping they aren't stressed. I don't like...
My 24 week old RIR gave us our first egg last week! I was so excited and have been checking daily with nothing! We found her egg under a pine tree. Since I noticed all the chickens making nests under that tree we have kept them in the coop and run so they learn to use the nesting box. I have...
Hey Wisconson friends! Quick question. I found out I have a brahma rooster, in my flock of what I hoped was all hens. We live in the racine area and my husband says we cant keep to rooster. Any ideas what to do. I would hope to give it to someone who wouldnt kill it. Any ideas? Maybe incan...
