Pros & cons of heat panels

I have used a seed heat mat on the floor of the coop. The chickens can sit on it for heat.

Pros & cons of heat panels

I am in Alberta, not in the mountains sadly. I am of the view that insulating a coop is useless. For insulation to work, you would need to prevent air flowing into the coop. Without air circulation, you will not be able to get rid of excess moisture. That will lead to frostbite. As long as...

    Welcome... to Chicken Park

I feed my chickens turkey grower, with crushed oyster shells on the side. It is 22%. I had feather picking problems with layer feed that would not stop. I would never go back.

    Welcome... to Chicken Park

Don’t be hard on yourself. We all have made mistakes and have lost chickens as a result. All we can do is try to do the best we can for our chickens.

What did you do in the garden today?

This was my first real year trying tomatoes. It wasn’t bad. I am in Canada and the season is short. I have a lot of green tomatoes that I picked today as frost is likely coming. Any hints on how to ripen them? I have 4 plants that I have hanging in my garage.

What did you do in the garden today?

Here are some close ups of the earth movers. They are currently digging through and loosening up a large compost pile. I just show up in a couple of days with my shovel and spread in on my garden boxes. It’s like shovelling potting soil.

    Double Yolks

Thank you for asking. I sold some half incubated eggs, if you can believe it. Some of those hatched under a crazy broody silkie. I did not have a good hatch. None of the double yolks hatched. Could be the incubator. I will properly calibrate it before I do another hatch. After reading...

    Chicken coop lights

I use a string of led Christmas lights in the rafters just above where they roost. They are on a timer that goes on when the light gets low and stays on for a set period of time. I set it for 3 or 4 hours during the winter depending on the length of daylight. This set up works well.

Hen pecks another hen while mating

I have seen a rooster charge another rooster while that rooster was mating to knock the rooster off. It seems quite common when the mating rooster is not the top rooster. It is actually quite funny. I saw a hen peck at another hen’s head twice while a rooster was on top of that hen. It...
