I agree they will be fine, but if OP is worried, there are a lot of coop specific heaters they could use. Even one of those electric plug in radiator heaters.
Chickens have lived without supplemental heat in areas with -30 Celsius temps for days at a time for hundreds of years. I think...
Unfortunately I allowed 2 eggs to be hatched by a broody hen that were 1/2 Icelandic. One was identifiable by feathered Legs and appearance.
The other comes from another landrace, Swedish flower, so it’s gonna be tough to know.
I have 2 cockerals from that hatch, I would like to keep and...
I found an area it probably laid down in next to a road that had been plowed after - we had a few snow showers and this was freshly plowed. The blood and snow packed down indicated it stopped. There were tracks onto the road.
I don’t know that owner nor do I have permission to be on that...
I’m happy to say the favorite hen, Frenchie showed up today. No frostbite. She seemed a bit wobbly. Not sure where she had been. Thankfully we’ve had mild weather 25-35 degrees.
Looked feral and fur was in poor condition. People dump dogs our here a lot. Doesn’t belong to any of my neighbors.
It blocked me into essentially a chute due to the snow, did a little false charge and then blocked the exit and barked/showed aggressive behaviour.
One of the missing...
When it turned its attention to me, I was a little concerned. Chicken run is large - 10,000 square feet. Fenced with a game fence, but I was going to plow a bit and had opened it up when I checked them earlier in the day.
It got my 2nd favorite hen too.
Thankful I didn’t get mauled.
I had a large 70-90lbs dog take at least 3 maybe 4 chickens. I caught it going back for more, it cornered me in the run and I probably killed it- although it ran into deep woods and snow in a neighbors property so I couldn’t check the stomach contents. The amount of blood indicates it was...
I’ve been using composted bedding after plowing a single path with my tractor during the winter to give the chickens more outside time and area.
Any other ideas to give chickens more outside time in run during winter?
During the winter months, i spend a large amount of time and money getting wood shavings.
I don’t want to spend money on a 3pt tractor chipper.
Has anyone had experience with the $400 range chippers from box stores?
I do provide both.
They also free range weather dependent. We are under about 2 feet of snow currently.
This is the first hen I’ve had that has passed - other than predators
Should have started on the remedies earlier, but she was always a bit hangdog and I assumed it was nothing.
I had a nearly 2 year old Icelandic hen die from egg binding. She laid long skinny eggs all the way through. I hatched some and they produced beautiful birds.
How common is egg binding? Does the egg shape indicate she was going to get it/be prone to it?
My other Icelandics lay normal...
I am considering hatching a bunch of barred rock eggs for a friend. The Roo is a barred rock. Unfortunately he has some other brown egg layers in with them. There is no option to separate. Some buff orphingtons, austrolorp, and I think Sussex.
Will there be any trait that will...
My issue with my first 2 hatches, with my own eggs, was incubating in a Poorly climate controlled space.
I am considering putting some light on some of the birds in January to jump start laying, but i don’t know how I feel about it
I live in Montana and want to buy hatching eggs from Minnesota in the next few weeks (if they are actually available)
Is low temp going to impact hatch rate. I don’t know how priority mail is handled - temp controlled plane holds or is it going to be in below zero and freeze the eggs.
Should...
We had quite a snowstorm. 16” of wet snow, impassable road- lots of trees down. The hoop coop collapsed inward to a great degree by the time I hiked from the main road. I was concerned a fall or the cattle panel smacking their head
No apparent injuries on the 20 birds in the coop. But...
