Put day-old chicks under a broody hen?

i have 9 hens, no rooster, and one of my hens (a Cuckoo Maran) is very set on brooding. I was wondering about getting day-old sexed chicks and place them under her during the night. I also thought about getting fertile eggs, but then I'll end up with some roosters again, which I don't like. Any...

Deedee's Inn: low-cost coop, run, and yard from Craiglist finds and freebies

Deedee's Inn all started with...Deedee. A KG teacher asked if anyone wanted her classroom chicks, and I said "YES, I do!" Who knew Deedee the classroom chick would lead to a flock of ten, and to a year of construction on their Inn. The first pictures below show what Deedee's Inn is like now...

HELP!! Need coop design advice! Criticize my sketches!!

Hi, looks great! Does your coop have good ventilation? My coop didn't at first, and I learned that it's really important. I added ventilation later. Without it, chickens can easily get too hot or too cold or too damp in there, not to mention the buildup of noxious gas.

My chickens are really weird. Is this normal?

Hi, My hens twice all started laying in the middle of the coop instead of in the nesting boxes right after I had cleaned the coop and put wonderful soft clean grass cuttings in the coop. They clearly figured that nice clean grass was the best place for their eggs! The roost: maybe your...

How to keep hens from flying over a 7-ft fence?

I replaced the bright blue curtain with chicken wire, which looks much better. I also clipped one of Amelia's wings as well as one wing of my youngest pullets. Since then, no one has flown out.

Thanks, bcAddy. I added a close-up pic of Amelia's head. She has a single comb, so she must be a Barred Rock!

Wow, amazing, especially for someone with hardly any construction experience! It is beautiful. Maybe you will build a guest cottage next. :0)

Need opinions about our newly built chicken coop that is attached to / part of garage

I would make it so you walk into the coop room to get the eggs. It gives you a reason to check on everything (food, water, does everyone look happy and healthy and clean) daily, give them some kitchen scraps and some attention! As long as you don't need to walk under any roosts, it shouldn't...

Need opinions about our newly built chicken coop that is attached to / part of garage

My hens do peck at a painted wooden beam that is in their chicken yard. First one hen started it, then the others followed. Chickens are very much "monkey see, monkey do".

Does anyone have experience with an automatic door from the adorstore?

Hi, I am installing an automatic chicken door from Adorstore.com. Does anyone have experience with it? I am really looking forward not needing to be home at sunset every day!

Need opinions about our newly built chicken coop that is attached to / part of garage

It doesn't seem like a crazy idea to me. Keep in mind that chickens only go inside to sleep and lay eggs, if their nesting boxes ate inside and their food and water is outside. At sunset, they go inside to be safe and get on their roost, and sleep. Poop mostly collects under their roost. During...

Here are the residents of Deedee's Inn! Deedee is the blue/grey Easter egger, about 1 1/2 yrs old, a

Let me introduce you to my Inn and flock of ten! In the first two pictures, you see the Inn. It started with a small movable coop, then I built the raised 4x4 coop with the porthole window you see in the picture. It was originally attached to 12x4 secure run space. Last summer I got four more...

Thanks! My chickens like them too. There is a roost that goes from one porthole to the other and they enjoy the window seats :0)
